Hello, I'm having my clutch redone because I seems like the bearing is faulty. Would you guys recommend redoing the flywheel? I'm asking because the part is not cheap and also, when the car is on the hoist if i dont have the flywheel it will take a few days to a week to get.

I have found that the clutch generally lasts longer than the flywheel on a TD5, and I can't really imagine circumstances where I'd change the clutch and not the flywheel.

When mine was done they said the flywheel was in good condition so it was left in situ.

Last year I did an engine swop on my 200K 15P Td5 Defender and the newer secondhand engine came with a new clutch/flywheel/cover plate that was less than 12 months old, a bit of a bonus I thought. Less than a mile up the road on the way home from doing the engine swop we lost all drive.
Took the gearbox out the next day to find that the centre had cracked out of the friction plate so I took the one off the old engine, compared the two and there was very little difference in the "meat" on the friction material so popped that in and it's been fine for the past 15K miles. The flywheel was totally shot plus grooved and the cover plate was grooved and the spring fingers were allmost worn through but then again the date mark on that one said March 2004 so looking up the service history the motor had done around 40K miles by then so over 160K miles it was about time it had a change. |

Yours is a.Puma though, not a TD5 with a dual mass flywheel. |

Personally, given the time required and effort to pull a gerabox and do the work, I consider it false economy not to change both in a Td5. Food for thought.

can you get single clutch and flywheels for these? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

If you mean can you get a solid flywheel and sprung clutch, yes you can. Some swear by them, some swear at them

If on a td5 and I was doing the clutch I would do the flywheel to without question. Cheers

Yes, there are a few custom fabricators in the UK that I am aware of. I have no personal experience with any for the Td5 however I have heard they are best for extreme off road and high performance rather than daily use. Do a search here for this if you are interested. Personally, again, were it me I’d stick with the DMF and Valeo clutch. I think a company called clutch fix has a good reputation?? Perhaps others might chime in with their experience.
