Probable Silly Question?
Whistle Concerning wing-top checker plate - Is it all pre-drilled???

Could you secure it to a wing using industrial type double sided tape to avoid the bi-metallic corrosion problem and therefore avoid drilling the wings???? Whistle LANDYWATCH

Would not fancy that method would end up coming off causing an incident

Some companies will do a gasket of some kind, supposed to stop the corrosion. I wouldn't advise glue-ing it on tbh! Ben

Yes genuine ones come pre drilled. I imagine Sikaflex will hold them. Steve.

I work in car manufacture and we use a lot of adhesive to make the cars (not LR) and there are adhesives out their that would hold it. I do not have a name of a retail product as all the ones we use do not sell to the public!

on my td5 90 i stuck all my checker plate on with the double sided trim tape that body shops use, its made by 3M and the plastic covering is green and i think its about £5 a roll.(may be more as i get it from a friends body shop), i put the tape arond the complete edge of the checker plate so to stop the dirt getting under it, i also put some in the middle of the wing tops as they are quite wide to just stick the edge, they were on there for 5 years with no lifting and i would regulary stand on the wings, just make sure that the plates fit nice and close to start with as the tape wont hold if the plate is trying to lift, i have just started to do my 110 but one of the rear corners and one sill was not 100% flat (strange that!) so i bolted and stuck.
i`ve only just picked up my wing tops so i dont know know yet how i will fix them, but i`m sure i`ll be able to stick them as the wing are good.
i think the only thing i did`nt stick on the 90 was the bumper step plate as i thought that might be too much stress on the tape, but i might try it on this one and see if it holds.
also i had to put longer screws in the wing vents but it looks like you might have to do that anyway (not sure).

no corrosion and no holes.

hope this helps LIFE`S TOO SHORT TO DRIVE A BORING VEHICLE

At the risk of getting laughed off the forum, I bought some un drilled ones about 8 years ago and fixed them to the top using external use silicon sealer - 3 years later they were still there when i sold the defender.Just make sure you leave for 24 hours before driving to be sure.

I imagine that if you were to bond it to the wing, you would need to prep the wing back to bare metal first since there is little point bonding anything to the paint.

As I said, mine was onto normal paint, no sanding or preparation other then to clean surfaces with some meths (I think, may have even need turps) and it was well and truly fixed for as long as I owned it.

i have just fitted my genuine wing tops, i scraped off the foam gasket then i made sure that they fitted flat on the wing, some hand bending was required, stuck the 3m tape all over, tried it back on the wing then removed the covering off the tape and stuck it on the wing, get it right first time as you will not pull it back off. cleaned and polished the wing first. standed screws in vents fitted back ok, now a drop of black silicone in the holes to finish it off. job done. silicone would also work just as well but as i`ve used the tape before and i know it works i have stuck with it. i also stuck on the bumper tread plates and feel that they will stay in place, i will have to see how they go. LIFE`S TOO SHORT TO DRIVE A BORING VEHICLE
