Done an oil and filter change the other day on my 2013 Defender 2.2 and used Penrite Enviro C-4 5W-30 fully synthetic engine oil. Specs say it's DPF compatible and ticks all the right boxes.

Just checked under the bonnet with workshop manual in hand and you're right psimpson7, I don't have a DPF . No oxygen sensor coming out of the top of the catalytic convertor just a blanking plug. All these years thinking Ive had one. Just started doing my own servicing since it came out of warranty so that's another thing I've learned.

Its time for me to join the conversation regarding the very complex question of 2.2l engine oil. My first question is how can I tell if my 2013 defender has a DPF is this just an EU thing? psimpson7 suggests it is very unlikely our AU defenders would have one. Ok I will look a the catalytic converter where ever that is. So our rang our Shell technical people this afternoon to see if Shell make an oil which is compliant to ford spec WSS–M2C934–B. Searching the Shell web site refers to an oil for the 2.4 but not the 2.2 they are currently updating the web page. Anyway Shell do make a compliant engine oil for the 2.2 L, Helix Ultra Professional AF-L 5w 30. Now here is the catch, it is only available in a 209 L drum available by special order through someone like Blackwoods an AU parts and mechanical supplier for the modest sum of AU$3480.00 Seriously how important is all this? I understand oils a'nt oils but really is putting something like Helix HX8 Synthetic 5W-30 really going to make that much difference? |

Australian Pumas don't normally have the DPF installed, at least not before the MY 2015 models anyway.
We've run Defenders as work recovery vehicles for decades now and we have used Amsoil Series 3000 for pre-Puma models and 5W30 I-ESP EURO MOTOR OIL for all more recent Puma 2.4 & 2.2 models with/without DPF. All our workshops report that Amsoil outperforms any other synthetic product on the market and, more importantly, where vehicles have been exposed to prolonged use in the field without oil changes those using Amsoil have shown no degradation in the sump oils despite extended use while the Castrol & Shell brands always show signs of degradation within the recommended oil change cycles. My own personal 110 MY2015 has been on a strict diet of Amsoil oil & filters and at 60k there is still no sign of any discoloration between oil changes. My dealer suspects that I change my oil before booking the vehicles in for service during the warranty period. Having said that, though, the original LR filters for the Puma are not easy to beat, they really are great quality ****CENSORED**** |

my local shop has Granville hyperlube C1, it does say meets requirements of: ACEA C1 FORD M2C934-B just checking this is ok for my 2.2 puma as i don't think it's been mentioned on other posts cheers Andy

Euro Car Parts is now offering Triple QX 5w30 C1
Does anyone use this oil in their Puma? Is Triple QX a reputable brand? |

Nowadays Motul states their Specific 913D is dpf compatible still being A5/B5. So I got an email from motul saying that Ford managed to use such oil with their dpf system. But I dont know if applies to the 2.2 puma engined Defender. Puma 110" SW

C3 is on the high viscosity side of 5w30 oils. I dont think it will hurt. Probably some minor drop on fuel economy. Puma 110" SW

Hi Dave-H, it depends whether your Puma (both 2.4 and 2.2) has installed DPF. Here in Australia, no Pumas have DPF at least until MY2014 (I'm not aware of the newer ones, sorry). That means ACEA B class is fine. However, I do use C class (Fuchs Titan as listed above), as it is not only significantly cheaper than LR's Castrol, but also better in my experience. I have Puma 2.2 MY2013, 110 HD wagon. |

I have a 2.2 with DPF.
We are half way through a Cairo - Capetown overland trip. We brought oil with us for one change, which should have been enough. But it turns out we are doing more miles than expected and it could probably do with another change before we finish our trip. Now the problem is, we are probably one of only a handful of DPF fitted vehicles in Africa. So compliant oil is non existent. What are the risks of using NON DPF compliant oil? Even the Land Rover dealers don’t have compliant oil for the 2.2 as the vehicles here are not fitted with DPF. |

Maybe check with a Ford dealer?
Ford spec = M2C934-B At best you risk clogging up your DPF filter, then your Engine won’t run... |
