2015 2.2 Puma transmission vibration - fault diagnosis
Nov 2015 build, 90SW Adventure (150bhp) 11000 miles

There is a resonance/vibration/graunching noise which occurs between 1250 and 1500 rpm, in all gears but most noticeable in 5th and 6th, I think because there is a much shorter time at this engine speed in the lower gears when accelerating up to cruising speed. It's more noticeable when starting off from cold. The noise seems to be coming from the middle of the vehicle, around the transmission area. I first noticed it three or four months back.

Yesterday, I experimented with the diff lock and low range, as there is quite a bit of snow about. In low range, the noise doesn't occur.

I took a video on my phone, but not sure of the best way of posting it. The noise maybe isn't all that obvious on the recording... Do I need a you tube account?

Any ideas? Before the latest low range experiment, I was thinking clutch/gearbox, but now I'm thinking it's relating to the transfer box Current Steeds:

I would look at the U joints. Missing nipples. Unbalanced propshaft? Puma 110" SW

I would be keen to know as well as my 2015 90 does exactly the same but more frequently in 3rd and 4th. It’s been back to the dealership loads to try and fix the fault but they can’t seem to find where the noise is coming from. 15 plate 2.2SW XS

Carried out demo drive for technician when in for 3rd service. Unfortunately, the noise wasn't that bad. He put it down to a characteristic of the vehicle. Yes, that old chestnut.

However, he did say to let them know if it got worse and it would be considered under warranty as it had been notified within warranty.

Prop nipples all present. No obvious wear, but I understand the only way to properly check UJs is to remove the props. Current Steeds:

Hello Smile

I would be surprised that the transmission is the source, since the sound is heard at a specific RPM. Instead, I would say it comes comes either from the engine itself or (more likely) from something becoming loose and vibrating.

I would start by looking for a loose bolt in those areas :

- Exhaust
- Heat shields
- Engine and gearbox mounts
- Engine bay
- Interior trim
- Bodywork panels

Hi, having the same problem at 1400rpm every gear at all speeds. Did you ever get to the bottom of the problem, it’s very annoying!

not sure if it's a common issue on the 2.2 but the 2.4 was / is notorious with the turbo heat shield / support bracket becoming loose.

good luck Thumbs Up

Thanks, I can feel the vibration under feet at the specific engine revs so pretty strong, It doesn’t happen when stationary but I will check the bracket. Also happens at any speed so doesn’t look like prop shaft universal joints. Very frustrating!

I never got to the bottom of this. The Adventure is now at 14K miles and it still happens, doesn't seem to be any worse. More noticeable when cold. When the technician came out for a test drive at the last service, he said he thought it was something to do with the anti-stall, but I have my doubts. To me, it sounds/feels like a bearing skidding. Current Steeds:

It really frustrating, been going on for months now, I think it maybe gearbox as it’s Rev related and not speed but only happens when moving and not stationary. If it was something loose on the body or engine you would expect the vibration while stationary!!

I am loathed to take it in to a garage as it may take hours to identify Sad

mine took years to identify (and I'm not talking about the bracket).....good luck.

the old other thing I'll mention cos it had be frustrated for years and those that I moaned to about it....

just be absolutely sure the diff lock is working as it should. try hi/lo range and diff lock on/off just to be sure it's all working as it should. Thumbs Up

Mines been like it from new and still haven’t got to the bottom of it, doesn’t seem to be getting any worse although it is always worse when the engine is cold.
Main dealer pulled the gearbox out of it last year and changed the bearings etc but that made no difference at all. 15 plate 2.2SW XS

Thanks, did they also check the transfer box? This has developed over the last 18 months and she’s 10 years old now and just turned 70’000 miles. It feels like prop shaft as the vibration is really strong and under foot for the few seconds it passes through the specific rev range (about 1250-1300) but it’s Rev dependant and not speed so can’t see how it could be the prop shaft. Going to try low range when I get time as see if it performs the same.
