Heated windscreen chip
I have a tiny chip in my heated front screen, after a stone flew up on the motorway. Its a tiny, tiny mark on the outside, like a pinprick, but you can see a crack sort of "under" the glass.
I spoke with my insurer, its the usual deal of 250 excess for a replacement, but they reckon it could be repaired with the usual resin injection jobbie. Is this right? I'd like to know before I waste my money on them.

Cheers. 2011 110 USW

If it's that small and not penetrated and damaged the heating elements then it's worth a go. Steve.

Had exactly the same on mine last year, repaired with the resin. You can still see the chip, the resin just bonds it to prevent futher cracking or dirt/water ingress.

mine was free .. shouldnt cost you, your insurer pays Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

From my experience, (a D2 owned from new with 240,000 on the clock and heated screen), stone chips don't seem to develop into a full blown crack, presumably the wire mesh adds some strength to it. I have several chips that were there before the freezing temps of last Christmas and they did not get any worse!

Got one too - called Autoglass, they cocked up the appointment, I gave up.

It's smaller than a match head so apparently fine - also unaffected in the freezing temps we had. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

£250 excess for a windscreen? Shocked Is that because your 3rd party?

What's the point in that, may as well just go and buy one direct at that price and leave the insurance out of it?

I went and hassled a guy who was fitting a new screen to a mates car the other day to have a look at the crack on mine and he basically said that there was no point repairing it and get a new one as you can't guarantee that the element hasn't been damaged. Craig Rogers

The process to repair if done correctly will damage the elements

The Process in short

1 Drill thru to the second layer (guess where the elements are)
2 Evac air
3 Inject Resin
4 Cure & Clean

A fair bit more involved yes you will always see the chip no matter how good the repair

A kit only costs £300.00 so it pays for its self over time Thumbs Up

I think with most insurance companies the repair to a screen is free (no excess) and the full excess is only for a replacement screen. John

Insurance companies NEVER do anything for free.

The line spun by windscreen fitters that a claim is "free" is utter BS. You WILL pay in your next renewal.

I got stung very badly in an "all costs recovered" no fault claim because apparently if you have an accident, even not your fault, you are statistically more likely to have another.

I've had two chips repaired using my own money - such is my lack of trust in insurance companies. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Get this one.......

I once knew a guy whose father had accidentally dropped some ladders on his car.

He phoned up his insurance to see if it would be covered, indeed it was.

However, it turned out that the damage was quite cheap to repair, so never bothered going through the insurance.

A few months later, his renewal came through and decided to change insurers.

All was good, except 2 weeks after his renewal, his insurance wrote to him demanding extra payment because of his "claim".

He phoned up and explained there was no claim, however, the insurance database had details of his "accident".

There was no way around the fact that he is now a far bigger risk and an accident is logged against him.

I guess you can work out that he wasn't the happiest guy on the planet! Craig Rogers

From our actual expereince this is rubbish.

My discovery was a total loss, no fault, after someone was speeding drunk, left the road and hit my disco writing it off.

Insurance (with protected no-claims) went down at renewal.

Same after a minor shunt my wife had - no issues - price didnt go up! Mike

It's my understanding that a heated screen cannot be repaired no matter what the size of the chip.
