This thread needs updating again.
With the engine in the chassis I got the gearbox crossmember painted up and bolted in: Click image to enlarge I then set about cleaning up the engine as it was pretty grimy. Cue some disassembly of ancillaries, many hours of brushing and scrubbing, followed by some paint and reassembly: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Next challenge was the hole in the bellhousing left where the clearance for the starter motor was added. After consulting with others and with some good help and advic I devised a cover plate out of some bits of aluminium and had them welded on by a local engineering company.

Onto clutch. The flywheel was drilled for the standard Tdi 9.5β clutch or a custom 250mm jobbie as used by M&D in the original conversion. The latter is no longer available so the option from M&D now is an updated Tdi clutch. Personally I would prefer to have as big a friction area as possible so I had the flywheel drilled for the Td5 clutch cover which uses a 10.5β clutch - the same as the V8.
Clutchfix made me up a set of Td5 cover and a V8 (sprung) friction plate which seems to do the job. Got it stuck on the back of the engine and then built up the clutch actuation bits and got the gearbox bolted on: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Last bit of progress which brings us more or less up to date.
Got the transfer box cleaned up and bolted on, this is a 1.2 box from a Discovery and I will have to see how it drives. Might end up going back to a 1.4 if I donβt like it but I may as well try it seen as I have the box already. Click image to enlarge Also bolted on a front prop so I can start thinking about the exhaust. Click image to enlarge The middle and rear box will be standard Td5/Tdci 110 units, however the front one requires a custom arrangement due to the non-standard engine. Given that the exhaust outlet is on the offside of the engine I need a pipe that crosses over like a Tdci one does, so my plan is to get a de-cat downpipe for a later vehicle and modify this to fit. |
