Anybody else got experience with both....is the slickshift stainless steel and the r slick ali? Im assuming you use the original lever cover? Couldnt help but laugh at the tmd website saying :"The shaft and the 2 balls are machined from a single billet" https://tmdtuning.com/shop/defender-short-shift-quick-shift/ |

So that’s two of us installing at the weekend. I’ve also got new brakes, wheel bearings and steering arm to go on!

Installed mine today - took more than 30 minutes though. The gearstick wouldn't fit with tape around the slick shift so I had to remove the tape and then greased up. Be aware of the LHD vs RHD. I didn't have to use a hammer to tap the two pieces together in a LHD installation.
Very happy after a short test drive 2009 Land Rover Defender 90 SVX Soft top 60th Anniversary Edition |

Anybody used the tmd version ..looks easier to fit and better thought out .......anybody had the tmd version and still happy with it after a year? Why do people choose the slickshift over the TMD product is it just price?Fitting the slickshift does look like a bit of a bodge and thats the hallmark of a unrefined under engineered product! Why does the slickshift not just come as a one piece rather than the banging the two pieces together and the need for a lock screw?

I have a slickshift and I’m really happy with it, totally changed the drive on my Defender.
I think the number of customers who fit it far exceeds the TMD version, one or two people here didn’t get on with it as a product from their feedback but the vast majority are like me and happy with it. I think to call it a “bit of a bodge and that’s the hallmark of a unrefined under engineered product” is an unfair comment on your part Nitram17. 2015 HT XS 90 2008 SVX 90 2000 XS TD5 90 |

I must admit that having to wrap it in electrical tape does seem a bit unrefined, can anyone see a problem if I just weld the two together?

"Why does the slickshift not just come as a one piece rather than the banging the two pieces together and the need for a lock screw?" So it can be fully adjustable to suit you sir and helps our friends across the water who drive on the wrong side of the road

Just fitted my slick-shift. Followed the video that all made perfect sense. Also had no need to add electrical tape as a tight fit.
Went for a test drive. Wow.......what a difference! Highly recommend it as it makes the box feel a million times tighter. Any suggestions on steering refinements 😂 |

I see legin ....by fully adjustable you mean its either left hand drive or right!for a moment i thoucht you could have the gearstick at any angle you wanted. |

It does seem strange that most people seem to go for slick shift instead of shift R.
I note that BAS sell the shift R on there website and I am sure they would not sell something that was not a quality product. As Nitram 17 says it would seem that the shift R is a more complete and easier product to install as well? 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |

Not strange at all ..... the Slick shift was the first and has been around for a few years now, so is more widely known and bought.
The Shift-R has only recently hit the market after development (barely a year ago) so is not as well known and publicised. In my (non expert) opinion, the Shift-R is a better choice for rhd motors, less to go wrong and easier fitting .... you can bet it’s development was based on the Slick Shifts shortcomings Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |
