Bit of an update for anyone who's still watching, with the rear end almost sorted I attacked the front axle, hubs discs and brakes where in good condition so axle just need a good clean up and 2 coats of corroless chassis in one.
New LR front springs and Koni shocks on Gwyn Lewis hardware. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Steering had a complete overhaul, box replaced, all new pipe work, new Pump, new ball joints and new Ujs to steering column. Click image to enlarge Removed the radiator which was leaking and installed some parts to the front of the engine QH water pump and heavy duty alternator. Just waiting on the new rad now and rad surround to finish out the front end. Click image to enlarge |

Thanks for the comments fellas, I find a thread like this is a good way to track the build
As per usual I've almost spent my €5k budget and it still looks the same from the outside apart from the galvanized cappings but hope to have her driving again by the end of the weekend Hidden progress I keep telling myself Nidge |

Would agree there with you Nidge, it's always the prep work/ the stuff you can't see that swallow's the budget
Will be great if you can get her running around by the end of the weekend 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper. Clayton. |

Well I stalled on getting her running again as the B posts and Sills were delaying the progress so I bit the bullet and ordered a set of galvanized ones from YRM. Should arrive next week.
Also had an issue with the paint as the aerosols I got for interior were different shade of blue to the exterior, sorted now by The Paintman with no issues. So folks I need your opinion as I'm undecided, while waiting on the B-posts to arrive I started playing around the look of the front end. What you reckon on the Silver XS grills and light surrounds, maybe a galvanized bumper to off set the cappings and galvanized rock sliders. Liking this thread - so many things I've done myself!
I went for a galved bumper and A-bar, like you, to go with the cappings. For my money, I'm not so keen on the silver. I'm about to get my car painted, and I already have a new black metal grille, so I've just gone for some santorini black headlamp surrounds. The old ones are the originals from 1994, and really faded. But black for me. It will also offset the alu hinges and window blocks. Which alternator did you go for, and presumably you upgraded the cable to the battery? Donald I went with the one Gwyn Lewis supplies, its a Bearmach 100Amp, seams decent and didn't break the bank.
Yes good point re upgrading the cable to battery, is due for replacement but not got around to it yet. I may yet in fact rewire the complete car I'm also thinking you may be right about the front end, that black with a galvanised bumper may be more in keeping a 1995 defender. |

Like I say - so many similarities!
I'm actually on Gwyn's site at the moment to get some uprated axle breathers, so I'll have a look at the alternator too. It's probably still something I'll put off a bit longer because...... I'm just about to rewire the car. I had a new rear loom fitted when the chassis was changed, and now I'm waiting for the bulkhead and engine looms to arrive from autosparks. The more I get involved in this, the more I think I need to consider having another vehicle as a 'runabout' so I'm not tied to keeping the LR on the road as my daily driver.
