Are you certain its dropping into the low map and the ECU not seeing overboost? Overboost wont always show the EML if its been mapped.
Unplug the MAF and see if it does the same Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent Last edited by bankz5152 on 22nd Feb 2019 8:01pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Sounds like it's possibly overboosting and then going into limp mode

+1 with overboost being the cause as turning engine off resets it.
For all I know overboost will never trigger EML/MIL on the Td5, though a fault code should be logged to ECU memory. Have you perhaps shortened the turbo wastegate actuator rod a bit too much? Or what other mods are you running. Have you checked the hose (~1/4" OD) going from downstream of the turbo (off the steel pipe) to the wastegate actuator is in good nick? If hose leaking or partially blocked then actuator won't operate as per design leading to frequent overboosting. If a case of overboosting then should be able to correspond performance drop with intake manifold pressure going over boost limit (typically 142 kPa above atmospheric pressure baseline) by monitoring MAP real time via Nanocom or similar. BTW there is no such thing as 'a' low range fuel map. There are low and high range versions of driver demand, smoke limiting and torque limiting maps, the use of which is solely based upon transfer case range selection. Transfer box position is constantly looked up during the fuelling calculation process (any time engine is on basically) and to my knowledge there is no provision in the code to switch to using any of the low range maps other than when low range is actually/physically selected. 24 yrs of Td5 ownership D110 Td5 MY06 fully tuned up ex-D2 Td5 MY04 Auto ex-D110 Td5 MY00 ex-D2 Td5 MY00 ex-D2 Td5 MY99 ex-D1 300Tdi MY89 ex-D90 200Tdi MY87 |

It can’t be overboost
It will default into the “more progressive power mode?” if you quickly stamp on the accelerator while the engine is idling, so it doesn’t even have time to rev up. Then it will stay that way until you turn off the ignition. In this mode it will still do 80 mph and it will still overtake, but it’s definitely a more gentle application of power on the throttle, as you’d want maybe in low range, and maximum power is not quite as good. Have you tried disconnecting the range switch on the transfer box? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

No, l’ve not done that.
It’s running a mild (25bhp approx) remap, but it was the same before that was done. The turbo wastegate rod has not been adjusted it’s at the standard length. |

Could be a faulty track on the throttle pot triggering limp mode.

Good thought, l had the same idea, but l’ve put a brand new pedal assembly on and it made no difference!

I will be watching this thread closely as my 2003 does exactly the same thing.

Our 2006 did it from new, until we sold it at 45,000 miles. My 2005 110 has done it since l bought it in 2014 but our 2003 90 didn’t.

One other observation I've made is that when I'm towing my trailer @ 3.5 tonnes & using full throttle up hills and alike, it seems to be fine. It's when solo & accelerate hard with full throttle it does it. The throttle then becomes less responsive as it does when in low range, and stays like it until the engine is re-started. So, it seems to relate to when the engine revs rise rapidly without very much load. ?? Weird.

plug that on to diagnostics to find out what fault it's throwing. if you don't have one, get a nanocom.
As you mentioned this car has had some "modifications" to the fuel map..... if it's driver demand, it's possible your map has a value outside of the range when you put your foot down which will show up as driver demand error (assuming your throttle pedal is 100% working in good condition). I've written maps which get this error if there's something i didn't take care of and then this fault is logged and everything feels sluggish after that till i restart it. the error will stay until cleared but the performance will be good, until i do the same thing to trip up the error. the other thing mentioned would be overboost. if this happens, it can also cause this, but depending on how severe the overboost was and for how long. this will log the turbo charger over boost error. Thanks for the information, it sounds like that could be the issue, although it did it from new.
