Replace. The side steps will be rusting from the inside. Get a new pair and treat them before fitting.

Mine seem to have lasted ok but they are looking a little tired now too. I think its nearly time to just replace

My side steps were looking a little shabby so I removed them, stripped the powder coating and surprisingly the metal looked in good shape.
A coat of rust treatment and a respray using rattle cans tidied them up, but that was short lived. 8 months later and the rust is returning. I may strip them again and get them galvanised. I think it’s worth persevering with the originals as there have been reports on here that non-original copies are made of chocolate. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS |

Same boat here, mine are looking tired and I’d rather have black alloy plates on top, but everything out there I can find don’t look much better quality, the Masai’s look nice but never in stock, thinking about just swapping to rock/tree sliders ?? Instagram; @gavin_walding

Yep. Just ordered rock and tree sliders from Brendan @ 4x4overland to replace my side steps. He does hot dipped galvanised ones. That way I know they will last.

Like any bit of aftermarket kit there are always compromises made. Not one bit of kit is suitable for every Defender and their owners. R + T sliders
Vertically challenged owners with Defenders with large tyres and lift may struggle to get in with R + T sliders fitted, they may be better off with a step. On our red 110 this one has been on for about 18 years. OK it could do with painting or recoating but they have done their job many times over.  Click image to enlarge Now if you damage the coating it will not rust due to the zinc galv. IF and I repeat IF you try hard enough you can damage these R + T sliders however that will be the least of your worries. Now in supermarket carparks tell the clumsy driver parked alongside you to stop damaging their car door on your vehicle!

You’ll be doing well to damage the above rock and tree sliders. I wrote off a one year old car with mine, and didn’t damage them. Didn’t help with my insurance premium though

If you have a non-metallic container you can fit the steps into and want to get rid of all the rust before you do anything with them, may I recommend this stuff:

I noticed my have suddenly started to rust. Little job this weekend is to wire brush and hammerite the area. It’s a little like a band aid on a gunshot wound I fear but can’t do any harm.
I been looking at replacements and see Naki.... do some stainless ones if you have the budget! Rock sliders are great but never sure on the look although landy Andy yours looks  |
