Picked it up after getting the dinitrol treatment from Trek Overland. Stopped for a nice sunset shot!

The side steps replaced under warranty a year ago had been fitted with the bar that connect to the chassis upside down. No idea why. I spent an hour cleaning up the steps and spraying with ACF50, turning the bar the right way up, cleaning and spraying the tow bar and underside of the rear cross member. All good.
I then found oil coming from the turbo to intercooler hose on my 300tdi - enough to leak and run down the outside of the intercooler. I tightened up the jubilee clip and had a wipe around. It is going in for the leak from output shaft on the transfer box in a few days time. As much as I love the old thing, it isn’t in my good books at the moment. |

Well it had to happen some time, with an average of 20 hours of off roading at our Woodland course per week, and over the last year and a bit of work, we finally have a major breakage.
I had done 4 hours of customers yesterday morning, and towards the end of the last session, I noticed a vibration from the front end. Nothing unusual in that, there’s normally so mud and clay inside the wheels they often vibarate. But this was a different type of vibration, much more mechanical. Then 45 minutes into my last customer of the day, a nice University student called Elanor, we heard a very loud bang front the front , just as we were crossing the most tree route rutted part of the course. The poor girl looked like she was going to burst into tears, but I assured her it was nothing to do wirh her driving., So we were in the low box, I took over trying to drive out, but we had no drive, Had a look underneath to see what might b wrong, but as you can see from the picture it was too deep in the mud and ruts. Tried the difflock, and realised we had only rear drive. We were in too deep to pull us our wirh just rear drive, so out came the front winch to pull us out whilst driving forwards. This got us out pretty quickly, but it was obviously something was wrong. Click image to enlarge |

Limped back to the unit in difflock high, and got her jet wash out.
Then we found something else, perhaps related, perhaps not! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge One of the larger branches had become lodged in the suspension are at the bottom, and had clearly snapped off In situation! |

So once it was a bit cleaner underneath, we got a better look at what was going on.
This is with the car in gear, but no difflock. https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...B38D12.MOV As you can see, front prop is spinning, meaning no drove to one of more of Rhe front wheels. From the mechanical grinding noise, I’m thinking broken pin in the door perhaps? I know it could be a half shaft, but I don’t think it would be making that noise? Any ideas guys? |

Yep we did wonder if it could be a CV joint, or even a half shaft, but the grinding noise sounds like a larger heavier mechanical item, the sound coming from the diff.
Will try jacking the front axle in a bit, to see what spins or what we can hear. |

Hope you manage to fix it without too much hassle.
Look forward to find out what caused it, good luck 👍 |
