Rear Crossmember refinished, with pics.
Just re-finished my rear crossmember using the Buzzweld FX-Liner kit... seems to have turned out really well. Only time will tell though.

I took it back to bare metal (80-grit) but didn't remove the tow hitch.

All in, took about 5 hours, including time between coats. Done 3 coats of the Rust Encapsulator and 3 of the Satin Black.

Good thumbs up for this kit, economical too.

Time will certainly tell. For £20 and a few hours of time though, I wouldn't mind doing it every year or so to keep it looking good.

It's the original crossmember and is in pretty good condition corrosion wise, but I think that's because the previous owner had chequer plate fitted, which was ruined.

If your Defender is under LR warranty and in my case a late 2013, has anyone had luck having this done under warranty? Mine has gone silvery and a bit of rust on the factory NAS step.

My 90 is currently in the body shop getting corrosion work done under warranty. I was told only the main body is covered so as far as i know the rust to the NAS step won't be covered as it's considered a 'bolt on item'. The 'paint' on the crossmember may not be covered if it's just cosmetic as paint is covered for 3 years and corrosion for 6. Having said all that I think it depends on where you take it, others on here have managed to get vastly more done under warranty than others. My dealer wouldn't even stretch to a pair of windows blocks... so I bought a pair myself for £30 and the body shop are going to sort them for me anyway Cool

I had step done under warranty, but after only 3 years. My rear crossmember was still like new as I'd always finished it with a load of wax after every wash. Then the dealer chipped the crossmember fitting the replacement step and washed the whole vehicle with some sort of chemical that stripped all the wax off. Had to replace all the wiper blades and start all over again on the rear step.
Last time I go to the dealer in Hull.

Mine was done under warranty, no questions asked at all and the bonus was they did it in gloss black which was great because my 110 is Santorini Black.

If the rear step bumper was fitted when new, or close to new, it should have the same three year warranty as the rest of the vehicle. Otherwise, genuine parts have a two year warranty. Current Steeds:
2015 110 UW in Grasmere Green
2003 BMW F650 the Hack
2000 Elise
1992 Ducati 888 (no longer in bits, yahoo)
1990 TDR 250 (in bits again)
1988 TDR 250 (no longer in bits) and for sale

Highly recommend Craig's products. Done my cross member last year about April, 3 coats rust encapsulated and 3 coats 2k fxliner, turned out extremely well. However, the rust is peaking back through at the seam along the top between the cross member and floor of the tub. Mine still had a small amount of corrosion in that seam similar to your first picture. So I'm guessing my prep work in that area wasn't quite good enough or the angle I was spraying at was wrong. Either way I'll be redoing that small area at the end of March. Closely followed by the rest of the underside.

I did mine last year using Buzzweld CIO (chassis in one) . I used the full can which was about 3 coats as recommended by Buzzweld and used the flare spray can tip.
Very pleased with the finish and still looking good, but may well recoat again this year.
I believe that CIO is effectively a primer but gives a nice satin finish similar to what the original should have been like but wasn’t!!!

This has inspired me to do mine. Though having just driven in to a car park with out touching the 2.1 barrier, and then scrapping my roof on ceiling of the car park, i may have to start paint work too
