well, that all looks pretty mechanical to me, but on the other hand, it doesn't look much like my 300tdi. Too dark and cold to take a pic just now, but i can do it tomorrow if no-one else has chipped in.
What I'm not seeing is the vacuum advance for the fuel pin/diaphragm. If you were to look at one of the online parts diagrams, that should help you pin it down? Yup! None of that gubbins in my Defender. Presume thats the EGR and air filter stuff? Donald

Just found this online - referred to as a 300tdi auto electronic pump, so that does look more like what you have?

My own fault that I didn’t have a proper look at it. I remember reading that there was no mechanical linkage to the pedal but there clearly is on this one. I’m wondering now if they’ve put one in for the egr system.
Making an EDC system work in a comp safari racer doesn’t seem like my idea of fun at all! |

Sorry - I know nothing about EGR stuff - my car was one of the very first Defnder 300s and didn't have one.
With a forum name like V8bobber I'm guessing you don't have another mechanical fuel pump to swap over? Shame you're so far away, I'd offer to take it off your hands! My garage man is suggesting it would be a good idea to get a 'spare' 300tdi and keep it in the corner of garage... As above, the Auto can come with the electronic fuel pump which is the element that is generally regarded as ‘fly by wire’ but the throttle etc is all mechanical
Hope this helps... |

The EDC on the 300tdi allowed LR to tune it slightly, so they're quite spritely compared to the manual. Darren

...which is a 'good thing' ... as it just underlines that the engine basics will take the extra tuning/tweaking. Hopefully to a sensible degree, this is where I'll be going in the next 3 or 5 months. Donald

My 300 auto was ‘fly by wire’. The accelerator wasn’t mechanical, it was a potentiometer that would cost a fortune if it went wrong. Mines did start acting up, but thankfully I traced it to a dirty multi-connector in the engine bay, a good clean out with wd40 had it behaving itself again. Wasn’t a bad car, but very thirsty.

Possibly cruise control, and a mechanical pump. Mind you the later 300 mechanical pumps had some electronic gubbins associated with the EGR which makes them more difficult to tweak. But that is not a fly by wire set up in the proper sense of the word.
