Puma 2.2 Smoke in Engine Bay
So, around 5 weeks ago I had smoke coming out from under the bonnet. Not huge quantities but enough to make me concerned. I couldn't find any obvious leaks, but I did tighten up the expansion tank cap and after a few hours I took it on a test drive and the issue had gone.

Well yesterday I drove to Southampton from Bristol. When I got there I had the same again. I opened the bonnet but I couldn't tell where the smoke had come from. There was still some smoke there and it looked like it had possibly come from low down, possibly the exhaust manifold area, but I don't know for sure. It had around 20 mins to cool off before I drove it back to Bristol, stopping on the way to check for issues, but no smoke at all.

I'm confused by how intermitent the issue is (5 weeks between seeing it) & the fact that it has completely gone away again. I can't find any obvious causes and wondered if anyone has had a similar experience? I'm assuming it is just a leak I haven't found yet dripping onto the manifold, but I'm wondering if there's anything else worth checking?

Just maybe. Oil dripping from turbo feed pipe to exhaust manifold or near. Burnt oil should smell a look white. Puma 110" SW

If smoke (burning smell?) its likely to be an oil leak or electrical. The fact the vehicle hasn't caught fire makes an oil leak more likely, however Pumas are notorious for the engine harness chafing anywhere it touches or is secured to the block. I caught my main alternator/battery feed just in time to prevent a dead short. Might be worth checking.

The smell of whatever it is should be the biggest clue.

Thanks, there was a definite burning smell, so (phew) I'll rule out electrics.

Actually I'll check the engine harness anyway.

Could it be the DPF operating, and the heat generated causing the fumes. Perhaps oil on the outside of the DPF burning off.
Would happen after a long run when the engine is hot.
Not certain where the extra diesel enters the DPF, but perhaps a leak there.

Yes, the alternator is way down there, and the cable run goes round the top front of the engine, along past the inlet manifold, then dives off towards the battery while the rest of the bundle heads for the ecu (on a 2.4 anyway, I assume 2.2 is similar).

Thanks that would kind of add up with only seeing the smoke so rarely which could coincide with the dpf operating.

It's a shame there is no indication of when the dpf is operating, so I have no idea if that was the cause yesterday.

But I'll have a look at it...

Just thought I'd update this one. This problem was resolved a long time ago. I needed a new intercooler. No issues since.
