Hmm. I'm slightly surprised at these "modern" Land Rovers preferring cruising at lower speeds. My Defender is a 300Tdi 110 CSW that I've converted into a utility. The whole vehicle bar upper bulkhead has been sound proofed (diy using Silent Coat) and still has original carpets.
It's running a 1.2 transfer box and 265/75R16 mud terrains and I've got to say she likes cruising at 65 for the first couple of hours and then after that (suspect gearbox and diffs have finally warmed up) prefers 75. This is with significant rust in the bottoms of the doors. I've welded up the passenger side but not got around to the drivers yet and its noticeable the noise coming through the gaps that remain. Fronts and rears run at about 30/32psi any more and they don't wear that evenly. On a long motorway run returns low to mid 30s sat on or below speed limit and never drops below 26mpg. Clearly they built them better in the old days Oh and only now thinking about replacing the original door hinges after 24 years! Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

I run my 90 at 30 psi all round and that's good for road, laning and off road.

I think the trick is they like to be driven, and driven hard. I don't moddly coddle mine but equally don't abuse it (well fix it if I do).
All of the drivetrain has been upgraded / replaced over the last 2 years (put two new lockers in and, my fault, let the transfer box run out of oil). Engine hasn't really been touched apart from oil changes and is on 185k at the moment. But need to look at head gasket and possibly injectors. But still not too bad considering I'm not the best at giving it regular oil changes. But it does get used daily which I think is the biggest advantage. from the tyre place mine were all at 30 - and seemed over bulged where the tyre meets the road, so bumped them up to 36 front and 38 rear, look much better now, more natural and not like I have a puncture Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

My 05 90 had to do the 1000km Chur (.ch) - Hants several times.
I figured that it needs to be comfortable at 110 k which is the standard continental M road. I had Ashcroft gear set fitted so it can do that all day. If your truck is doing a lot of fast road work, it's fine to be slower than 9/10 vehicles, but you don't want to feel permanently embarrassed! The important thing is that the speed you do for 6 hrs must be okay for you and your truck. Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ... |

I completed the trip up north doing about 490 miles in a day. I eventually set the tyres at 36 front and 40 rear with light weight in the back, although I had two 9 foot long body panels on the roof rack on the outward journey. Overall mpg was only 28.5 which was a bit disappointing I think. I was travelling about 55-65 mph depending upon the lorry traffic but on the way home there was a lot of crawling/stop & start on the M6/M5. I overall the Defender performed well. ——————————

Good thread!
I do a lot of M-way driving, as well as a bit of slow stuff in my 2006 TD5 110 Have fitted the 1.2 transfer box, remap with usual upgrades and she goes happily all day long, 75/80 (GPS readout) drinking at 24/26 mpg. Fitted a rev counter - as much out of curiosity! - and at these speeds she runs at 2,800 - 3,000 rpm. Comfortable. I do run on 265x70 on the usual rims (saved me the inch I needed to get into the garage!) and it makes her quite brisk off the mark, and helps with the towing, but speedo about 6% fast. 34F/40R psi is usual. A long run does mean I don't have to listen to management when I arrive home! |

My TD5 will happily cruise at 70 all day and would go faster if speed limits allowed! However, I tend to stick around 60 - 65 mph on motorways because higher speeds dramatically increase fuel consumption and also conversation becomes more difficult above 65 mph!!

Agreed mine will sit happily at 70, and comfortably overtake if needed.
But for fuel economy im generally sitting between 50-60. Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

I struggle to overtake from 60, let alone 70! Is yours tweaked or standard performance? ——————————

My 110 sits happily at 65mph.
I did try one with the Discovery transfer box but found that it made first and reverse gear a bit high. Mine will sit at 75mph and at that speed the engine actually becomes quieter, but l prefer to just sit at 65mph. It’s got a mild remap so will maintain the speed up most hills. I’ve got a Nakatanenga cruise control kit to fit and that will likely make long journeys a lot more relaxing. |
