Wales 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey
I was home over Christmas so fitted a few of the goodies I had waiting at home! I really miss having a project to mess about with when I'm in Saudi so lying under a Defender in sub-zero conditions was thoroughly pleasurable Laughing

For some absurd reason I forgot to take photos of most of the new additions so this post will be a bit light on pictures.

Starting with the non-photo items

1, Head unit upgraded to Alpine UTE-93DAB (thanks greenlandrover)
2. Winch wired up using OEM centre console winch switch to activate the Trombetta 974 isolator solenoid
3. Soft A-Bar fitted
4. Premium front seats in XS trim fitted and are very nice indeed

And those with photographic evidence

5. Airbox derestriction mod done using the 'hot knife' method and filter changed for ITG
6. Griffin stainless exhaust fitted
7. Decat

Airbox impeller before

Impeller after - I couldn't get it out so had to break the 'blades' out. The outer ring has since been removed

Performance wise I noticed some improvement in driveability but in honesty nothing major.

Noise wise the main difference is the turbo wastegate/recirculation (?) sound, I hardly noticed any change in volume/tone from inside the vehicle, however I am informed that it's quite 'agricultural' from outside.

Next up is intercooler and a remap which I understand will give things a boost.

Defender is back in storage until my next visit home in April when I will be sure to take photos!

Sounds good. What’s the purpose of removing the impeller blades? More air and therefore more power?

More or less yeah, restrictions in the intake side of of things. It’s well documented all over this website, the following thread is a good starting point for information www.defender2.net/forum/topic25864.html

I recently enjoyed a couple of weeks at home... A very welcome break from the Middle East.

Again more parts had accumulated at the house and the girlfriend was keen for me to get them moved out of the way Whistle so a great excuse to spend some time messing with the following;
1. Allisport intercooler Mr. Green
2. BAS remap Thumbs Up
3. LOF clutch pedal POWERspring - what a faff to fit
4. Clutch pedal grease nipple mod (details here https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic22839.html )
5. OE winch switch (big thanks to PaulMc expertise!)
6. Optimill fuel cap
7. EGR blanking plate
8. Black rear canvas (to replace natural coloured one)
9. Tracker fitted Thumbs Up - no photo's for obvious reasons

I didn't get round to fitting everything so next time I'm home the following outstanding bits will go on;
1. Safari Equip rock sliders
2. New carpets
3. 'Adventure' Mats
4. One piece rear shafts
5. 30mm spacers (experimenting with offset)

Defender is now with a local mechanic having;
1. Transmission/handbrake drum leak seen to
2. Gwyn Lewis A-frame ball joint

Some photos...

And finally a video of the exhaust note remapped with the intercooler fitted - has given me a very heavy right foot Mr. Green

It came from a guy named Gavin Martin who ran a company called Artmin Designs. He used to custom make the badges but when I recently emailed him I received the autoresponse "I have decided to retire, so Artmin Design Ltd. is now closed. All outstanding orders will be fulfilled." - shame. > 110 XS Double Cab

Fallon name plates make the badges too. Not sure about personalised ones though. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

With me away in Riyadh, the Defender went off to a local mechanic (new to me) for some general maintenance and MOT prep:

- Gwyn Lewis A frame ball joint with grease nipple fitted
- Front and rear brake pads
- Injector seals (again - fourth time lucky?!)
- Transfer box leak repairs
- Rear hub seals and gaskets
- Engine, gearbox, transfer box and axle fluids
- Couple of sundry bits

I collected during my recent trip home for Eid holidays, all good but mechanic was not convinced on the transfer box leak being cured. He said it looks to have been apart/rebuilt in the past with sealant everywhere so I will put up with the drip for time being and look to source a spare transfer box and freshen it up with Ashcroft sleeved case and a HD cross pin when time permits.

Happily it sailed through the MOT with a comment from the tester "better than when it left the factory" which I was pleased with! So with the general maintenance out of the way I was able to mess about with shinier bits

As always my photography skills leave much to be desired...

I fancied some extra poke from the wheel/tyre combo so am trying out some 30mm spacers. These will not be to everybody's taste I'm sure Laughing

After getting suckered in by the below video I had it in my head that I needed to swap out the Terrafirma steering damper that I had only fitted a year previously for a JLR item

Honest opinion - no detectable difference but it's one less thing on my mind and was cheap enough not to lose any sleep over

Next was EGR blank. The BAS remap maps the EGR valve permanently closed but Pete recommends the blanking plate is fitted anyhow... Simple ten minute job to fit a £3.85 part in location 4 below so seemed daft not to. Loosen top bolt from above, bottom bolt from below (lying beneath the chassis), slide in the blank and tighten bolts. Job done.

I had been meaning to swap to one piece rear half-shafts to eliminate one point of slop from the drivetrain. I was keeping an eye on ebay and picked up a pair of mint genuine JLR shafts. Again, simple job to whip out the five drive flange bolts and withdraw the existing shaft complete with flange as a single unit and slip in the new one piece shaft, complete with genuine JLR gaskets.

The shafts have made a considerable improvement. Slack/slop when pulling off from a standstill more or less eliminated.

Finally, something I had been researching from day one! Since the vast majority of my driving is done unloaded the heavy duty rear springs were too, well, heavy duty. They also made the rear end high so I wanted to level it out slightly.

So after far too much forum reading and extensive/exhaustive research of all possible spring specifications, free lengths and rates available from both genuine JLR offerings and aftermarket, a pair of... BRITPART DA6449 springs Big Cry seemed to best fit the bill for my requirements. The DA6449 are supposedly a similar rate to the CSW white/green/green RKB500300 springs but an inch lower. Personally I think they are softer than the RKB500300 as the wire diameter is around 19.5mm versus 22mm odd for the RKB500300. Again simple enough job, the longest part is getting the wheels off the ground without the pillar jack decapitating you.

Wish I had done this years ago. The rear end is comfortable now if such a term can be applied to a Defender? No more whiplash driving down the road. The rear end has come down a bit (by 1" I guess according to the spring specifications) but still has a slight rake which I like

And fitted

Couple of other bits done to tidy it up too:
- Mantec raised air intake bolt hole blanking plugs
- Synthetic Dyneema winch rope (hook not fitted in the photos). Partly for winch safety/performance, partly to relieve some weight from the front end
- Shift-R... Which is incredible and highly recommend (second time round - see here Embarassed https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic67864.html) Such a satisfying mechanical 'clunk' on engaging gears.

Then last job before heading off for Riyadh I removed the final pieces of chequerplate from the rear tub quarters, had the holes welded up and dropped the Defender at the paint shop. Also taking the opportunity to tidy up some other bits and bobs paint wise and have series headlight conversion panels painted up to fit...

Back home in August so progress to follow! > 110 XS Double Cab
