My 2002 TD5 had the original battery until 2015 and I replaced it with a genuine LR battery as I had a discount voucher from the local stealer.
I totally drained the battery in 2016 by leaving the lights on overnight and after that (and sorting out the immobilser!) it was never quite the same and didn't like cold mornings. I replaced the battery again early last year with a YUSA and if the 110 isn't driven for a couple of weeks the voltage drops to around 11.7 and this isn't always quite enough to start it! I recently bought a solar trickle charger to try and maintain a reasonable state of charge and I'll let you know ifit has any impact! |

Wonder if Toyota / Jeep owners feel the need to carry jump leads around? |

I've carried jump leads around for 20+ years and only used them once on a colleagues Jeep one very cold evening ๐

I've only ever used them to help other people (although I know it is tempting fate to say so).

If thinking jump leads for a Defender make sure that the croc clips are fully insulated as the positive post is close to edge of battery box.
Anderson SB175 mounted on battery box saves opening up battery box on a Defender 35mm2 copper cables are good, be slightly wary of aluminium ones or copper coated ali Decent length jump leads say 4.5m with croc clips one end and Anderson at other end plus short say 0.5m croc clips one end and Anderson at other end gives best of both wells. Some of the Land Cruisers I've seen appear to come with two batteries as standard
Never used jump leads in my Defender, used them on the RR a few times. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

I've never carried jump leads, even on old Series vehicles, over many years.
Fortunately the only time I needed them, a friendly guy in a Range Rover Classic at the other petrol pump, dug out his set and got me going. He tucked them away under all his stuff piled in the back - and I promptly stalled the vehicle! So he had to dig out his jump leads again..... I think he let me off, as the LR concerned was built in 1948. He did gently suggest that I "buy a battery" though......... Back on topic, I'm having difficulty starting my petrol Ninety from cold at the moment and am beginning to suspect that a tired battery is the cause. Following the suggestion on here I'm currently charging it, and when fully charged I will leave it for 48 hours and measure the voltage drop. I actually hope it's the cause of the problem, as it is easy to remedy. |

I never used to bother on series vehicles, but they always had a starting handle. Many, many times did I start them with the handle, usually just because it was possible and fun to do.

More out of curiosity than anything..... When you fit the Anderson plug to the front of the battery box, where do you bring the cables out? Is there an issue with there being a โholeโ which could potentially allow battery gas into the cab? Is a grommet sufficient or do you need glands to provide an airtight seal? |

Would not worry about airtight seal, as the lids are not an airtight seal, well not on any I've owned. Grommet will do fine.

As said above grommets will be fine. That's what I have done with mine.

I always carry jump leads in both my Landrovers just in case. If Im not using Defender for a few weeks I connect to an optimser in garage to keep fully charged.
