Another tyre size and wheel size question!
I am thinking of ditching my steel wheels for a set of boost alloys, but every time I get near, I get another puncture. I now have 3 practically new 205 size tyres. My question is .... Can these width tyres be fitted to boost alloys. My only off road use now is gravel tracks, other than that it's towing on the road. Thanks

You’ll struggle to get 205 onto boosts. In theory you could but these types of tyre don’t expand well. Tried and failed for my spare....

Boosts are 7j x16, that is exactly the same size alloy as fitted to the Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 before 235/70/16 became available for these vehicles, these were shod as std by LR direct from the factory with 205/16 tyres.

205’s will be fine on Boosts - yes they may take a bit more effort fitting but they will definitely be fine

Nope. The 205 were only fitted to J6 wheels on the Disco 1.
Both the 15 inch and 16 inch J7 wheels either has 235 or 255 from the factory.

Most tyre websites seem to think 205s are fine on 7" rims.

(Edited to hide an embarrassing maths failure!)

7 inch rims are only about 178mm wide (7 x 25.4) so comfortably narrower than a 205 tyre. Darren

The Disco 1 was never fitted with 15 inch diameter or 6 inch wide wheels by the factory. Both the standard steel and alloy wheels were all 7J x 16. Darren

Sorry, but LR have never ever fitted 15” wheels to any Discovery 1, neither have they fitted 255 to any Disco 1 either, the only 255 tyres fitted by the factory were on Discovery 2 vehicles.

LR have also never fitted 15” wheels to any Discovery, Range Rover or Defender for general sale.

You’re right, the 7J 15inch is aftermarket. But OE was 16inch J6 with 205 tyres. Boosts are J7.

Yeah, I found that page too but it's wrong, I'm afraid. The standard Disco steel wheel is exactly the same size as the alloys. Darren

That’s a bit disconcerting then as our local ‘contrôle technique’ (french mot) station used the french version of that site to check our wheels/tyres were within spec!

Despite my earlier certainty, I've just found this page in the 300tdi Discovery Workshop Manual that says the steel wheels were 6J after all. I would have put money on that not being the case Confused

However, what it also says it that 205 tyres were standard spec. for the 7J alloys too, so it looks like we're all wrong Rolling Eyes Darren

You are of course absolutely right! An inexplicable and highly embarrassing maths or brain failure lead me to conclude otherwise, hence my (now edited) post above.

My LR 90, bought brand new in 1985, came as std from the factory with 205/80/16 Michelin M&S tyres on steel 6”x16”x33mm wheels.

It was a Slate Grey Hard Top, with ivory wheels and roof, with factory options of PAS, Rear wash wipe and heated screen, 205 Radials, Tow Pack, Deluxe Vinyl seats and cost exactly £10k incl VAT.

It is still on the road and on its original plate - if this sounds like your vehicle registered in Feb 1985 and you would like to know it’s history pm me Thumbs Up
