Interesting that you say “dumped engine oil through exhaust, so lots of black smoke”
If it had dumped the oil into exhaust it would have been blue, whitish smoke Black smoke indicates more failed intercooler, or its hoses to me. |

Was more to say IF it was black smoke, check your intercooler and hoses, incase it’s these that have failed. But if you are happy that it’s turbo then there is a slightly used one for sale.

Sounds like the Oil seals in the turbo have bit the dust sadly, Might be worth a look at an upgrade if you have the budget, Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Maybe get your ECU map checked out?
My Alive Stage 1 remap was certainly effective the Defender went like stink after it was done, but caused it to dump unburnt diesel through the exhaust in great white clouds. (When you floored it) I thought the head gasket had gone! The Alive depot in Bolton, Manchester didn’t sort it and l had to have the Defender reset at Land Rover. After that l had it remapped by Dynachip and it’s been fine since then. Although very good,it doesn’t perform like the Alive one. I am guessing the Alive remap was tweaked too much. possibly/probably wise to stick with ALIVE, if they are the ones that has modified your truck...
I thought that was pricey for a turbo, but I don't know too much about them.. I had TD5Inside play with mine and apparently getting approx. 170 from a stage1??? Goes like stink, and gets through fuel like a hole in the tank... But very little black smoke, and I have noticed some white smoke in the mornings but it is cold... I would also assume (if it is your turbo that's dead) that if you put another standard turbo in, you may find yourself in the same position in the future?? Id seek advice from those that have the same mapping as you, or get advice from the company that mapped the truck, they should know best in terms of stress on the engine for its age, and how far to 'push it'... Out of curiosity.. what MPG are you getting?? Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

180bhp is close to the limit for a standard TD5 so it will find any weak point in the system, l would take it back to Alive and ask them to find out what has gone wrong with it.
Although the failure won’t necessarily be their fault, they probably owe it to you to at least have a look at it. |

Mines had a little tweak, and I have been contemplating upgrading a few other bit, just to reduce the risk of faults happening... Regards
