Sounds like either a change in driving style and/or visit to Nige are in order
![]() OK I'm running 32" tyres not 33" but done some pretty extensive offroading with wheel spinning but never broken a half shaft, maybe I'm just more sympathetic. Not sure I want to find out what my weak point is now I've got pegged Ashlockers, Ashcroft halfshafts, CVs and drive members all round. Probably the gearbox ![]() But then again with three lockers don't tend to spin the wheels. That's cool mate. It's always better that weak spot is somewhere relatively easy to get to 😊 Broken half-shafts don't generally happen on vehicles predominantly used on-road. It happens laning or off roading where a spinning wheel is suddenly stopped, the bigger the wheel the greater the shock. If you want long lasting drive flanges, fit a double lipped hub seal, remove the stub axle seal and let the diff oil lubricate the wheel bearings and drive flange splines. Thats how it was originally designed to run. Or just fit one piece ![]() If you want to go mud plugging fit Ashcroft shafts and flanges. You won't break shafts then but you will move the weak spot to a more expensive and inaccessible place. But they are shiny and you will earn bragging rights ![]() Personally I have a pegged rear locker but use the half-shafts as fusible links that will break before something more expensive or inconvenient does. Good luck with your defender ownership, remember that the drive trains were designed in the sixties to be simple and easy to fix in the field. Assuming your shafts and flanges are in good condition, I'd say your just as likely to snap a one piece shaft as a 2 piece. You don't see many faures where the splines have been sheared by a single event, more many miles of wear.
The improved manners of one less sloppy splined joint would be lovely! Sadly I have a Salisbury and one piece shafts aren't an option ![]() |

↑↑↑↑↑↑ @miker What am I missing? My 2002 110 Td5 has a Salisbury fitted and I have a one piece half shaft in the short side and it's been in there a fair few 1000 miles.

IIRC, Ashcroft do a warranty against breakage which I think was either 1 or 2 years.
