Snapped rear one piece half shaft.

Ooops had a bit of a whoops moment greenlaning at the weekend. Thankfully the shaft snapped at the hub end so no need to pull the diff etc. Its a 2003 td5, I've been told to put a puma shaft in it as its stronger. Made it a interesting day as I was the 1st of 4 landrovers and had to winch up the rest of the lane. Thankfully their was plenty of trees! 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Neither. 33" tyres that slipped on a rock and bounced. I think the spin and then the sudden grip caused it to go 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Unlucky, but the 33s put quite a large turning moment on the shaft compared to std, one of the risks of uprising I guess. Cheers

I've never heard going one-piece half shaft described as a risk 😂
On the other hand a big spinning wheel that stops suddenly will always shock something, usually the half shaft.
If you've never broken a half-shaft you haven't been trying hard enough 😉👍

That's a very popular and common method to break halfshafts!

It’s said to be a risk as the late td5/ Puma shaft is constant diameter all the way down the shaft, whereas the 300tdi shafts are waisted. I’d still rather the 300tdi shafts and zero backlash/ stripped rear drive members though.

The two piece shafts wear at the drive member splines and are pretty simple to fix. If the single piece shaft snaps it can mean splitting the diff from the axle to get it out if Lady Luck isn’t on your side.

Yes, of course it is possible. However The vast majority of issues with the two piece shaft is people reporting spline wear on/at the drive member, not the shaft snapping.

Have a search on the forum for one piece half shafts and read up on the general consensus. From my perspective, the jury is out and I still consider fitting the one piece units the next time the drive member splines are worn. This is the first time I’ve actually seen one snap, hence the surprise.

A broken one-piece shaft is no harder and no easier to remove than a broken two-piece!

Forgive me but you cannot compare wear in one with shock induced breakage in another Shocked
2 piece irritatingly wear at the drive flange splines, single piece do not.
Both types will snap if overloaded. 10 spline will break more easily than 24 spline.
Quite often if the shaft breaks at the diff, the broken stub can be removed without diff removal with the use of an appropriate magnetic removal tool such as that produced by X-Eng, dependant of course on the amount of twist prior to breakage and spline condition.
I have plenty of my own practical experience of shaft breakage over the years and really don't feel the need to explore the consensus of other armchair experts Wink
I take a one piece half shaft over a two piece any day.
