is there much difference in the SD1 V8 and the range rover classic 3.5 V8 ?

Bigger valves fitted to SD1, and the front cover is different putting the water pump at a different height.... Other than that not much

thanks chaps , going to fit it into a range rover classic and wondered if there would be any problem fitting it .

The blocks (on all the V8's) are more or less the same, so just unbolt the RR specific parts and fit them to the SD1 block.

IIRC the LR manifolds are quite restrictive, cast jobbies; although I dont 't know what the SD1 ones are like... you may get a bit more ooomph out of fitting better ones to the rangie. might entaul some welding on the downpipes though.

I would agree that an exhaust manifold change can make a big difference to this engine. I had a genuine 90 V8 Station Wagon some years ago and, after fitting a SS exhaust with balanced tubular manifolds it was like having a different engine - it would pull a next higher gear in most situations with ease. A great improvement. Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!
