My thoughts would be to start with the thermostat. It's the cheapest and easiest bit to change. Replacements are hit and miss, even genuine so test in hot water with a thermometer prior to use (I've had duff genuine and waxstat).
Eliminate the simple things first and don't always assume the worst.

I think the next plan is to drive it, carry spare water with me, check levels often, if the gauge starts to go up, use the IR meter to see where any hot spots are.

I agree with JST just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s good. Very easy to remove and test it too.

OK, I have changed the thermostat and the sensor in the thermostat housing.
Temp gauge is still going into the red, even after a short run but doesn't stay there, it seems to fluctuate. I checked the temp of the thermostat housing and it was only showing about 40c on the IR reader.
I have noticed the PAS pump squeals, especially when driving through water or on full lock. I originally thought it was the Alt squealing but I tightened the belt today and then none of the belts would move (evidently too tight) if I moved the belt by hand the pAS pump could be heard to squeal. I loosened the alt belt off slightly, and the belts worked ok but the alt was only putting out 13v as apposed to its usual 14.4v (it did occasionally kick out 14v so I assume the alt is ok!!)
I'm now wondering if the PAS pump is seizing/running tight and slowing the water pump and alternator down?

the IR is showing it at 40deg on the housing as before. shes not smelling hot or loosing water.

I still maintain an electrical fault, does the temp gauge fluctuate with Alt output? Cheers

I haven't checked but I dont think it does, another thing to check though.
I assume the resistance changes as the temp goes up, maybe I'll have to check resistance once when the meter is up in the red, or just invest in a replacement temperature gauge

Exactly the same as the sypmtoms I had. Bad earth on the gauge. Measure the temp at the sender. If that is not hot then the problem has to be electrical. If it is not the gauge, it is the sender. 1988 110 200TDi Hard Top

have said that for a while! housing is 40deg on IR, gauge shows red hot! that to me says electrical fault too. Cheers

I assumed it would have been electrical but didn't want to push my luck and cook the engine. I'm still very much a novice with the DIY stuff on the Landy.
The binnacle is loose (I have a replacement piece it attaches to as the old one broke). I haven't checked the dial end yet, I was working my way back from the thermostat/sender. I'm also finding it awkward to get time out to look at it due to family issues, hence why its been dragging on so long...
Dial check next it is then Wink

If you take the wire off the sender unit at the thermostat and with the ignition on touch the wire to earth, if the guage goes all the way up its probably ok, you could replace the sender unit just to be sure,

That's not the right sensor for a Disco 200 Tdi in a Defender.

The right one is PRC6663 (as in my first reply)  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin, you are correct. I had to fit a Defender 200tdi sender in mine as its a Defender temperature gauge.
Ive changed t he sender and thermostat by the way, so looking electrical as others have said earlier Wink

PRC6663 is a Defender sensor (late 2.5TD/NA/Petrol) but it directly fits the Disco 200 Tdi Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
