The marvelous x-ray app on my iphone has managed to remove some of the disguise from one of Land Rover´s long wheelbase mules.
Thought you might be interested. Exposed is the belt line (lower edge of the side windows) and the classic Land Rover stepped shoulder. The power bulge replaces what used to be the separate clam shell bonnet of old. The air intakes and headlamps bear similarity to those of the DC100. The side glass is enclosed in stamped metal framework, as on the old Defender. Most likely under the disguise, it is painted matt black to match the windscreen frame. Black plastic wheel arch frames, as on other RR products, protect the paintwork, and have the signature notch at top dead centre (pointless, but sweet). The overall proportion, angle of windscreen and side glass, and some of the details look similar to Discovery 4/5. to be honest, i think the vehicle isn´t a DC. More likely (because of the fixed rear door and glass visible in the rear view) it is the station wagon. However the disguise gives me no clues as to how the rear side glass would look, so I made a DC out of it. Here´s an obvious shot at what the 110SW could look like. simple matter-of-fact side glass. No Discovery swings or swoops in the C-pillar.
Having looked more carefully at the various pictures, I reckon the side window frames and windscreen frame will be body colour and not black. I like the more utilitarian approach. Honest and back-to-basics. Click image to enlarge 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

And of course, if it doesn't pass this test, it isn't a Defender.

Good job! But I think the belt line will be more rounded and the hood bulge will be wider towards the windshield and will open in the same fashion as the old Defender. I think this will be much more modern retro than LR is letting on. But I could be. Wrong. Thanks Rj. I wasn´t sure sure about the hood bulge, so you might well be right. The rear edge of the hood is well hidden on the mules. The belt line may be softer than I´ve shown. There isn´t much more to extract from the photos, but I felt it worthwhile to get a feeling of the proportions of the car. There are a good number of cues from the Defender, without it becoming a modern replica of it´s ageing self (which is what the Mercedes G became).
I won´t comment here on the price or the technology, as that has been covered elsewhere, but i am starting to believe that LR design may well have used the long gestation time (since DC100) well. The new vehicle will be far enough away from their mainstream vehicles, and very much identifiable as the workhorse of the brand. What they need to do is sort out their quality and reliability. That alone would make them popular with the customers they need. The ones who primarily want a workhorse. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

I never use emojis but:
>:/ Can’t we just have a stretched D4? This looks likes it’s made by Dacia or something. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/ Current: TD5 '110 "Lucinda" Thread here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic62562.html |
