2007 Defender 110 300 Tdi SW Chawton White

Defender roof gutter paint repair

I will be respraying the roof of the Defender. This is because of some damage caused by long distances on bad roads and a piece of wood.

My problem is the gutters. I don't think it's a good idea to remove the sealant as I don't want to open that can of worms.
I don't have leaks.
It is just the paint that needs attention.

I have 2 options:

1. Sand, prime and paint.
Or
2. Sand, stonechip, prime and paint. (I did this long ago on another Defender without any sealant in the gutter. That's the only reason.)

I know that plasticising the paint will be best but for that small area I have to weigh up on cost over practicality.

Attached are 2 photos, one of the general condition and another of the worst part.

Why not just paint the roof, down to the line of the gutter, and leave the gutter unpainted?

That way you could also add new sealant as and when required?

My guttering looked similar to yours, but it was definitely leaking. It was a pretty unpleasant job digging out the old sealant and re-doing it, but I've just left it unpainted.

If I get the roof repainted - it's quite a long way down the list of things I'll get round to when all the important stuff is done - then I think I'd do as I said above, mask off the guttering and paint down to it, but leave the sealant itself unpainted/exposed.

Unrelated to what you're asking,but I'm also thinking of getting a clear, or matching white 'decal' put on the roof by some vehicle signwriters, just to be 100% sure I'm keeping the rain out of the seams. Donald

Ah, fair enough. There are probably 2 or 3 companies in town doing this, so getting it done shouldn't be a problem. But even at that, I'm not 100% convinced that it's a sensible option myself. I'd need to ask them about the capabilities and long-term durability of their materials.

Anyway, sorry to have taken things off on a tangent, hopefully someone else will chip in with a more informed comment about the guttering paint. Donald
