What about this TDCi?
Just out of interest.

Have seen a TDCi XS 2.2 SW that l like, TBH l prefer my TD5 but the TDCi has only done 3,900 miles, FIL’s neighbour selling at £30,000
Chassis is already rusted but not corroded, although it lives on a drive in a seaside town.

This looks like a very good deal but what’s the long term reliability of the TDCi like? I have heard bad things about the TDCi including my friends which blew the engine at 42,000 miles.

If you like your Td5, stay with it. One of my biggest mistakes was getting rid of my old Td5 for a Tdci. Lost loads of money, but I’m now back in a good place, a Td5

Another vote for the TD5 Whistle Found the 2.2 dull more expensive to run, slower and bland. Sold it and brought another TD5 Mr. Green I'm not the only one either Whistle

6 speed box is nice, but in a Tdci 1st is too low any way. Biggest improvement is heating/cooling, especially the ability to clear the side windows, but the rest you can keep. Particularly it’s crappy engine and delicate fuel system.

Hmmm OK then, maybe keep my own TD5. I don’t have a problem with the heater in mine, it seems to work better than most.

If you use it as an SUV or "soft roader", then stick with a TD5.

If you use it as a Defender is designed to be used, ie as an off-road capable truck, then go for a 2.4TDCi. The 2.4 is superior in almost every respect to both the TD5 and the 2.2TDCi as a working, commercial vehicle.

i have had td5s and raced several of them too.

now own tdcis. more comfortable, better heater, quieter. like a td5 improves with a remap. personally i wouldnt go back to a td5.

i recall when the td5 came out everyone loved their 300tdis..... Cheers

Wow that’s not a response I expected, and is the complete opposite to my views on the subject. A Td5 is for proper defender use, such as off road, and a 2.2tdci is if you want a road vehicle, the 2.4 isn’t much different to the 2.2 just older and just as delicate. Hated my 2.4 in the end.

2.4 10my on has a better tc system matched with the 2.4 in my experience. Antistall and idle Jack make it more user friendly off road to, again based on my experience which includes 10 years working for lr and 13iash years teaching off road driving/racing. Cheers

Good and bad for both then.

It’s harder to get good TD5’s now, as they are all at least 12 years old.

I will stay with my TD5 for now, but when the time comes to change l will probably go with a TDCi 2.2 SW mainly for the cheaper road tax over the 2.4.

I drive a TD5 and a 2.2tdci both of them have BAS remaps which makes a huge difference to them particularly the Tdci which has superior torque compared to the TD5.
The superior torque coupled with longer gearing makes the tdci a better quieter distance cruiser.
Having said that I still love my TD5 which I feel is a better car for knocking around locally so it is a case of horses for courses really. 2016 Defender Landmark 90

Looked at a TD5 before we bought the 2-2 TDCI. Never regretted it , if fact after getting ours a close friend sold his TD5 and bought one like ours and has never stopped smiling. Says it all really.

get a 2011 2.4 no dpf and silly oil dilution and lower tax rate DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I've never ever had any problems with my 2.2 ...
(except the MT82 gearbox output kit which needed replacement by an Ashcroft kit, same for 2.4)

The 2.4 has to cope emission laws for M1 = cars - the 2.2 is allowed the emissions of a N3 = heavy truck (due to a grace period for N1G trucks). Just compare emissions and see soon that the DPF does not change so much. The DPF seems more a cosmetic issue to me Wink

And the water cooled EGR of the 2.2 seems way better - never had any issues with it Thumbs Up

And the piezoelectric Bosch Injectors in 2.2 Defenders are way more reliable than the magnetic ones in 2.4

My response to your initial question: I'd never ever buy a Defender after 2015. They're way too expensive and you can only loose... Staying with your truck is the best thing you can do in times like these ... Cool
