A remap is something I have been considering for a while.. I have a 2008 90HT which I bought second hand with 14,000 miles on the clock. It has never had any of the issues referred to by the OP and alluded to by others here. This has made me wonder whether my vehicle has already had some sort of remap? My previous Land Rovers have been petrol engine Series. This is my first Defender so I have nothing to compare the performance to.

My question is, is there an easy way of establishing whether my engine has already been given a remap prior to me taking ownership?

Not sure. Even with the BAS tool connected, I couldn't see an easy indication of which tune was already downloaded (though it might be something you can interpret from reading off the info on software versions, not sure, I didn't do a before and after comparison). Might be worth a chat with Pete. I guess somebody who knows the software version numbers inside-out would probably be able to tell if they were the factory tune or something else, but maybe no more than that.

There are certainly good and bad vehicles, and there always have been, so you may just have an unusually good one. One of my old 300Tdi 90s (bought used from several previous owners) had less drivetrain slack with 60k miles on it than a lot of new vehicles have. When I bought my last 300Tdi in 2007, I worked at the dealership so I took every single stock vehicle for a short test run to pick the best one out of the bunch for drivetrain slack, and also looked at bodywork fit, to make sure I got a good 'un Laughing ---

Hi BM, thanks for the info. I’m going to follow your advice and speak to Pete.

Very envious of your former role at the dealership giving you the opportunity to inspect and compare so many Defenders. Nice one Thumbs Up

Another BAS 150 remap here, cannot recommend highly enough!

It's like an entirely different car esp. in 3rd/4th from 30mph upwards.

I'm afraid there's no easy way to tell, unless you can ask the previous owner.

Edit: I have no idea why I thought you were called Steve, and since you're probably not, I apologize!

Not an easy way, but a tuner will know by plugging it in if it has a standard or modified map

I've never calculated mpg as I don't to know. But I'd doubt it has improved after remap, because it is much more fun driving with the extra power and torque. It's difficult not to put your foot down. James

the OP has a 2.2 most of these have an issue with the standard map that results in the Kangarooing, the 2.4s dont normally exhibit this trait with the standard map , the ECUs etc are not the same DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Out of interest, how does one unplug the range sensor? Does that have any other side effects?

If you crawl underneath there is a sensor located on the transfer box more or less above the front propshaft with about six inches of wire and a plug on a bracket. Just unplug that, optionally blank it off to stop crud getting in. I'm going to run mine up to a switch on the dash so I can choose high or low range tune in either range. Most of the time the high range tune is preferable for me, but on very rough ground there is not quite enough throttle damping so I want the ability to switch. ---
