When you replace the VCV you have to do a pump re-learn, only certain tools can do this, I don't know if your one can or not. For more info do a search on VCV - blackwolf is one of the resident experts on this issue Thumbs Up

The Hawkeye pro does it. At least it has a option on the menu for it...

So........

Finally got the pilot learn done. Turns out that the temperature sensor in the cylinder head was faulty.

Seems to be running OK, for now......

Hi,

I recently bought a 2009 Defender 90 2.4l puma with 100k on the clock and very quickly found out that it is leaking fuel. Having done much investigation and online research I've come across this forum thread, which seems to be talking about a similar issue.

I think I need to replace the pressure relief valve on the injector rail.

I just wondered if anyone could give me their advice on a couple of things?

1) Is it unlikely that the injector rail itself needs replacing?
2) Is it most likely that just the PRV needs replacing or is it a good idea to replace the return line banjo at the same time?
3) Is this a job that can be undertaken by a very inexperienced individual (me) or do you need to re-pressurise the fuel system, drain fuel or re-prime the fuel etc etc?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not likely, no

Not sure what you mean but in my experience with Landies and Transits, best bet is to replace the scv at the same time. The SCV is on the pump

Replacing the parts is easy, you might need access to a programmable diagnostics computer to do a pilot learn though...

Thanks so much for responding Soupy.

I'm pretty sure that the leak is coming from the pressure relief valve or the spigot or the fuel return line. I was asking whether it's worth replacing all of these at the same time or whether I just replace the PRV and all the washers/seals that connect all those items together.

Is it recommended to replace the SCV at the same time because the failure of the PRV is merely a symptom, rather than the actual failure?

I assume that you only do a pilot learn if you replace the SCV?

Do you know whether it's a good idea to replace the PRV with a genuine part at vast cost or do you know of any quality, but cost effective alternatives.

I'm tempted to just replace the PRV myself and see if that resolves the problem, if it's a simple job and no fuel line bleeding or re-pressurising is required. Thoughts?

Thanks for your help, really is massively appreciated.

If it's just a leak, I'd replace it and see what happens, you can always put the old one back on if needs be. Getting it to fire again can be a pain, i.e. bleeding the fuel system. Easy start helps, although that's not ideal.

I replaced both valves on a 2.4 tdci transit last week (same engine) and didn't need to do a pilot learn. My understanding is that over time the ECU compensates for wear, when you replace either valve you should tell the ECU that you've done it.

The valves I used were off ebay and non-genuine. Not had a problem although it's early days.

Thanks Soupy. I think I'll track down some parts and get a friendly mechanic to install them for me. Fingers crossed it solves the problem without great expense!
