I've had a rummage through my old photos and found this... not the best but it does just about show that the rubber bit is on the swing away plate only and not fitted at all to the back plate...

Yep and you can see from the below where the corresponding holes are in the flat plate which would mean to drill two additional holes in the rear door which is not indicated in the half arsed missing instructions supplied by Duckworths.

This is the part I am interested in as it seems to me to be in place to latch in the swing arm when closed and should prevent rattling.

The opposite is true, the rubbers engage when the door is open, so they act as a stay and keep the door in the open position..however I’m not 100% sure that is there actual job, the could be classed as a bumper for when the piston is at its full extension.

Actually your pictures are quite clear - thanks Smile

You can see that you are 'missing' the second half of the rubber stay.

Very possibly, as it's not immediately obvious if you fit the flat plate that we have.

I guess it depends if you are bothered about drilling more holes. I have to say I'm not enamoured at drilling the two for the top bracket but I've resigned myself to having to do it if I want a reasonably priced wheel carrier. The thought of drilling two more isn't thrilling me. Stu...

First off I don't think there's much need to get irate at Duckworths over this - lots of people are selling these and as far as I know only Duckworth bother to sell an alloy wheel compatible version.

There are no retail fitting instructions as it's not a retail part.

The "civilian" carriers don't have the rubber buffer parts, so just don't fit them if concerns you Whistle

The flat plate is full rear door version, the stepped plate for the soft-top-type tailgate.

The spare carriers also are not currently available from Mantec so if you want one at the moment you don't have a lot of choice than to fit one of these ex-MOD overstock ones, or a clone. But the clones don't fit with 3x NAS lights at the bottom so I've gone with one of these.

Yes you have to fiddle with the nuts and bolts for the bottom bracket. Yes there are a bunch of parts left over. But it is still a proper Mantec carrier for a fraction of the price of the one that you can't get anyway. Wink  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The key diagram for the above issue:

If you don't want to drill the door then don't fit this part, which isn't on the retail one anyway.

The differences I can make out between the retail carrier and the Wolf one:
  • Wolf carrier has one or two bottom bolts too long due to Wolf crossmember having extra plates in its construction.
  • Wolf carrier does not include captive nut plates. This makes fitting the bottom hinge bracket a bit fiddly/sweary with a civilian chassis (dropped nuts).
  • Wolf carrier has additional "Door Holder" part not seen on civilian carrier.
  • Wolf carrier designed for Wolf spec steel rims and tyres not alloys and has short studs. Alloys require extension studs, and (as on retail carrier) oversized hex nuts from original carrier.

The Thomas Performance instructions are just a PDF containing the original (retail) Mantec instructions and the disclaimer of

You may find that you have surplus nuts & bolts left over after having fitted the kit and there may be small differences in the kit to the diagram below but, not to worry - this is normal.

I'm sorry Martin I think there is every reason to be irate with Duckworths over this.

I could have bought one for less online from any one of the other sellers that got into the bulk purchases of Ex MoD items but I chose to go with Duckworths to support them as they support the LR scene, including this forum, and because I wanted to buy from a LR main dealer to have the 2 years LR parts warranty. When the item is advertised as including full instructions I don't think it is unreasonable to expect to have them included in the box.

You say it is not a retail part and doesn't have retail instructions then why does Duckworths advertise it with an RRP (Recommended Retail Price) and instructions on their website -

Quote:
£167.92 (+VAT at 20%) - RRP £436.4(+VAT at 20%) - you save 62%

Quote:
Includes all fixings and instructions
Manufactured by Mantec For Land Rover.

There is no mention by Duckworths that they are selling MoD overstock, instead they are deceptively passing them off as genuine Land Rover parts and by virtue of them being a Land Rover franchise you expect them to be sourced from Land Rover. Quite simply if I am buying what is marketed as a Land Rover accessory then I expect to get a part that is designed to specifically fit my vehicle.

The alloy wheel fitment is only 3 x extension studs which can be bought separately and are not exclusive to Duckworths.

The retail one as you put it (Mantec branded) also includes some strengthening plates not included in this MoD overstock item because as you say the Wolf is reinforced in the areas where the upper and lower hinge brackets fit to the car. It's not clear yet if without these plates it can cause an issue on a car that isn't reinforced in this area.

If you're not happy with it, how you were sold it or want clarification over warranty etc etc then speak to Duckworth.

I'm just trying to help by providing some instructions and pointers as like you I found nothing posted anywhere relating to fitting one (I looked for ages) - so I researched it and worked things out.

The bits you've referred to as strengthening plates are what I referred to as the nut plates. Thumbs Up  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

As this thread was started by Duckworths I would hope they'll be along tomorrow to give some clarity. In your defence of the crap service offered you perfectly illustrate the primary issue, and that is you, me and it seems several others have wasted a lot of time trying to answer these questions due to the absence of proper fitting instructions. If I'd bought it from an unknown seller on eBay I might have a different view but I haven't, I bought it from a franchised LR dealer and I expect better.

I'm quite a competent engineer and worked out for myself how I thought it should be built and fitted but without having the instructions it made it much more difficult to be totally sure - and when I'm drilling holes I like to be very sure.

The nut plates:-

Shocked

OK in my defence, I didn't originally know how you'd bought it, who from, how much for or your expectations. I'm only trying to help chap, very sorry if I made things worse Confused  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

It is classed a Genuine Land Rover Part designed by Mantec for MOD Wolf use, as per description on our listings.

Instructions are correct for what is supplied in the box, they are not the retail mantec carrier instructions

We have sold over 1000+ of these carriers with no fitment issues., I believe we are the only supplier who have had alloy adapter extensions manufactured.

If you are unhappy with this product or the service? then please return the product for a refund. https://www.facebook.com/duckworthparts
