Traction Control Problem
Hi all,

Had my 2.4 90 HT since May 2011 and it has been totally trouble free to date.

2 weeks ago the traction control started to randomly activate at low speeds. Sometimes not at all on a journey sometimes 2 or 3 times in 20 miles. Always at very low speeds and when pulling away. Now I know this is what it is supposed to do, but it is doing it when there are no real traction issues. It sometimes intervenes so much it almost stops the car.

I have checked and reseated all the fuses and relays and this has made no difference. Unplugging the front wheel abs sensors brings on the ABS/ Traction control lights and they go off when replugged but no improvement. There does not appear to be corrosion in the plugs. I am thinking either a bad wheel sensor or the ring in the hub is blocked with grot and grease.

Any thoughts, I'm stuck.... Confused

Hi Jonno

Have you plugged it in any sort of diagnostics?
When dealing with ABS sensors etc, you need to see what they are all doing, or if there are any communication problems?

Very difficult to diagnose without I'm afraid.

Worth checking the earth points on the transfer box though,
As this is usually connected with T/C ABS light problems.

Are all the ABS sensor leads ok?
No rubbing through, causing issues on axles etc? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Good idea with the earths, I will go underneath next time I get a day off.

This old topic sounds quite familiar too:

I'll try the earth leads first, I don't have any diagnostic kit beyond a multimeter. The leads all look ok and no lights on until I unplug a sensor.

Try changing the brake fluid as old fluid can gum up ABS pump.

Well after much head scratching, it seems that it was likely the earth wire to the drivers side outrigger causing the issue. There was no obvious corrosion, but the metal looked a bit black in colour. Wire brushed it then re dinitrolled over the top and the traction control has been behaving for a week.

Its odd as it was only ever applying the brake to the drivers side tyre.....i would have thought a bad earth would cause more random problems.

One thing i did notice is where the cables bend around to go into the abs unit they are pretty much rubbing on a sharp edge of the bulkhead worth checking and taping over them if needed.

I've got almost exactly the same problem, i'll check the earths.

I've just had a set of shocks fitted and it started as soon as I drove away; I think something must have been disturbed Big Cry My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

For anyone searching in the future, one of my rear sensors was not seated by just a couple of Mm- I tapped them all in, none of them moved apart from one rear one - it wasn’t visibly out but enough to cause the problems!

Easy fix. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

Well after saying cleaning the earth wire fixed it....it returned. Not as bad, but started again.

The fix, a new battery....was still starting the car fine, but I thought battery when the traction control issue was at its worst after a cold start when the battery had taken a kicking.

Cleaning the earth must have just lifted the voltage enough to stop it, temporarily.

Well after many months and almost exactly a year after the problem first surfaced, its back.
Front drivers wheel traction control activating, sometimes lightly, sometimes violently.
Odd the weather has just turned cold and damp same as last year and its back.
Again worse at the start of a journey, making me think battery again, but it checks ok...but it did last year, but the day a new battery was fitted it fixed the problem. Also the AA came out and scanned it and their kit said low voltage somewhere in the ABS system.

To say I am sick of it is an understatement ! I replaced the drivers abs sensor last year and it made no difference, the cable resistances seem equal.

I will try and reseat all the sensors, but odd why to within a week or two of the same time last year its back, maybe the edge is taken off the battery in the cold weather.
