If you really want a bombproof bike, I would definitely go for a bike with a Rohloff hub.
Lots of round-the-world cyclists use Rohloff. Lots of Tandem riders use Rohloff because they last better than Shimano/SRAM when 2 sets of legs are applying power... I have 2 (one MTB and one Cyclocross bikes), and they really are awesome. When Mark Beaumont cycled round the world... Rohloff (in a Kona frame) https://road.cc/content/news/144912-mark-b...rd-attempt A few other options https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bikes/thorn-gr...brand-new/ Handmade in Scotland!!! https://www.shandcycles.com/rohloff-bikes/ Just stunning - Ti frame with Rohloff https://www.vannicholas.com/touring-bikes/pioneer-rohloff another option https://planetary14bikes.co.uk/ Click image to enlarge You will find chains last so much longer, replacing cassettes is a thing of the past, and the damage-prone derailleur is gone for good You can even dump the chain altogether - some manufacturers build belt-drive bikes! Here's the one on my Ti (Van Nicholas mamtor) MTB: Click image to enlarge Had my first about 9 years now, still love it. Just an annual oil change and it's ready to go. I have Avid BB7 mechanical (the pic has an old Shimano caliper I have swapped) disks for simplicity/reliability. Chains last so much longer than a conventional derailleur... I have a specific KMC chain for Rohloff, with a rock-solid Middleburn Crank Set and Royce BB (Sq Taper)... all bombproof... My Cyclocross (Kinesis Crosslight) also a 2nd hand Speedhub, got an awesome deal on an ebay bundle... again rock-solid. My go-to bike for covering distances on bumpy and tarmac roads...
