I wasnt comparing Audis against BMW's i was camparing them all as absolute crap - BMW's just more so; mainly as most of them just look dog ugly and yet the driver (usually like the outside of a hedgehog) thinks they are uber cool. Audis are going the way of BMW's in terms of owner attitude, although their redeeming feature is they still have a bit of exterior design and fun - unlike the BMW which continue to be dog ugly inside and out. That is before we mention actually how rubbish BMW's are...reliability isnt all that; i know a few who need various components that make land rovers look lame (engines, gearboxes and diffs - one guy in particular i know had massive issues with his M3). Ok they balance the odd chassis, so does many others and to be honest you probably wouldnt notice the difference on the motorway anyway! But then throw some snow, ice, rain infact anything at a BMW all their balanced RWD chassis stuff goes out of the window anyway as the owner is still waiting to get out of the drive, let alone get on the road We wont mention how they shafted both LR and Rover...take the mini - a Rover design, stolen as part of the reason for purchase the group, just as some of the x5 systems were taken from the Range Rover. Shocking, often overlooked as people focus of Phonix So in short Jeep, i dont need to justify. BMW and Audi - it wasnt a comparison it was a statement about both! I assume you own a BMW, if you do probably a black one - i understand they only do Blue, Black and Grey now Just on white - yes actually, showing an 80's car (i wont mention Click image to enlarge) proves nothing about now Mike |

So its all about image? Oh dear...
For me its about handling, chassis dynamics and the engine. And yes I do have one - a 335d in my sig. Claimed by many journos to be "all the car you'll ever need." No Audi or Merc has had such praise. And I have a Defender for snow.... And there are no motorways in Cornwall. Plenty of fun roads though for rapid driving and green lanes for the 110. And talking about image while owning a white RRS.... Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

I wouldnt so much as call it image - more class and style!
Most joruno's that talk about this sort of thing arent to be held up as being the most balanced - often whole brands can get tarnished if a few more heavy weight journos keep spouting the same rubbish. THere are still better cars than a BMW any day...something BMW owners cant stand most of the time...which is half the problem - even top gear will say that. 2 cars...because one cant handle the bad weather - not very well designed...not very green - Mike |

So why do BMs win test after test? Why are their engines class leading for emissions yet still powerful?
You put them down yet with no reasoning, just vague waffle that shouts "naive yet opinionated." Anyway I'd never have an RRS. I'd happily have a proper RR. And between them, our BM and 110 cover pretty much all bases. One fast, comfortable, handles brilliantly. The other goes anywhere, fits anything in and has bags of character. Genuinely no other pair of cars that I would rather have. Which is handy. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

First i said clearly i just dont like BMW's for a number of tangible and other reasons.
Many cars win test after test. Some cars that win these so called tests dont do well "real world" Trying to goad me on the whole RRS FFRR thing...carry on, it would only be the sort of thing to expect from a BMW owner... usually why the BMW owner reputation is there - and for the record the RRS is a proper range rover, in the same way a disco is a land rover. Personally im on record saying that given the choice (which i had) the FFRR isnt for me, the sport is by far better in again tangible and none tangible ways and as i have liked it since i saw the first pre-production i can only say im glad they are popular. One thing for sure my RRS cann do everything both your defender and BMW can do in one car! Its often amazing that the only people who dont see what the rest of the world thinks of BMW drivers are BMW drivers Last word from me said - i have nothing to prove here Mike |

I couldn't say if beemers, mercs etc are good cars or not as I have never driven any, but the old 1950s 300 SL merc I think is one of the most beautiful cars designed.
As to Rangies etc...they had a showroom full at Lookers when I was after my Defender, I didn't even sit in any of them, it never crossed my mind to even think of getting any of them (probably couldn't afford to anyway). On the subject of journos, I do remember one mag saying that some far-eastern soft roader jobbie (possibly a kia or something like that) was "the best off-roader ever made". So does your RRS go fast? No. It it fully capable off road? No. Is it good on fuel? No. Has it got a decent sized boot? No. Does it make you look like a wannabee footballer? Yes. I am no blinded BMW fanboi - the image put me of them for many years and they make some SH*TE models (X3, X1, anything with a 20i engine, any car that hasn't had it's runflats ditched, etc, etc), 90% of BMW drivers are utter muppets (although RRS drivers are worse - they had to make up for not having a proper RR) who bought the car mainly for image BUT they make very well screwed together cars (only Porsche and Lexus can compete for build quality) that handle well, go well, are amazing on emissions (165bhp and sub 110g/km - outstanding) and if you buy them for the right reasons (not image) then they are usually fantastic. But you know that anyway and are just having a wee hissy fit because some/most of us don't like your "chav that's made a few bob" wagon. You seem more than happy to bash everyone elses cars though - especially Defenders. On a Defender forum Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |
