Zag,
I suffer from asthma, and have always had a problem with cats. I don't know what it is but they just set me off when they start jumping on me. As for dogs I have a yellow lab that lives with my parents (to old to move him now), when I lived at home with the dog my asthma was never a problem, I also spent a while working on a dairy farm and never had a problem with asthma. Although it did take a few days to a week to get used to them. Now when I go home for the odd weekend and see the dog of have a trip to the farm it does set my asthma off a little but not every time. If the kids don't have a problem with your mates dog I would say try and get the same breed, it could also be a cleanliness thing as well. You should ask your mate how often he cleans any dog hair up. with all the modern germ killing cleaning fluids on the Market these days kids are not able to get a good immune system. Thanks Russ, that's encouraging we come into contact with Spaniels, Visler - or however you pronounce and spell it, Shnauzer - or however you, ditto!, and a Labrowdoor - or however you.....................
The house is a constant crap hole as I am largely responsible for it's daily maintenance ( housework not my thing! Wife teaches and I look after the kids and work evenings and weekends - supposedly!  ) and it's probably whats causing the asthma in the first place  Well what would you rather do Hoover the lounge or play with old cars, boats and bikes  |

If they are ok with a Vizla then look at a German Short Haired Pointer or Weimeraner. We have had both. Superb 'proper' dogs with short hair (Easy to care for).
Our new puppy should be born in 3 weeks time |

I'd get them allergy tested.
My sister had serious asthma and dogs didn't make it any worse. However moving from Surrey to Cornwall made is MUCH better. It's now all but gone. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

Dampness has a lot to do with it, when I lived in Greece my asthma as almost non existent. Then coming back to the damper climate in the uk shocked my body so I had the re-adjust. Russell

Also suffered with Asthma all my life, cats, dogs, horses, pollen have all set it off although when I lived at home we had a dog that didn't bother me unless I allowed it to jump all over me etc. I suppose you must get used to it. Also suffered from exercise induced asthma when cycling and it was always a treat to ride in France as I didn't suffer then, made me feel like Eddy Merkcx... However on return to the uk I'd be wheezing by the time we hit the M25....

I suffer from those cat things but our dogs(15 huskies) are not much of a problem apart from when in full molt and pollen is high ie now. Our son has been in hospital a few times with chest problems and has been classed with asthma but he is fine with them. As long as you clean up excessive dog hair we both seem to be ok. Ths dogs do spend alot of time outside but do come in for the evening to watch tv.

i had asthma bad as a kid and my daughter has a very mild case.
short haired dogs are ok for me I got a border terrier, shes compact enough but very lively. will bread from hr and hve another TBH. great little dogs |

Have look at a labradoodle they don't shed hair, and are considered hypoallergenic Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Stay away from ultra short haired dogs Vis's & Weimies or the like minimal hair but very very fine dust not good
Labradoddle are pretty much the solution |

Thanks for the replies I did some work on a farm last summer and the owner had two BIG labradoodies! One was really nice as it's hair wasn't very curly whilst the other look blimmen silly. I did a search on them at the time but couldn't find a nice looking one, they all looked a bit daft, perhaps I should look into them again a bit more if they are hypoallergenic - thanks for that
