Low ground pressure tyre set up
Looking for info .
Looking at an old land rover to do general dogs body around the farm Need it to traverse wetish land. Therefore wondering about low pressure wheels . Anybody any info on that or have already done that? What issue might there be on running gear and wheel bearings etc. Vehicle will still have to be road legal.

In summary: Am I looking at a white wheel? with road legal floatation tyres?

How low a pressure are you talking about?

I've run the factory steel wheels with 7.50R16 tyres at 0.8 bar (12PSI) which is pretty low. Substantually lower than that and you'd run the risk of taking the tyre off the rim. The only solution to that is beadlock wheels but there aren't many that are road legal.

I think he means minimal impact on the ground itself.

I have a 110 that I run with kumho kl71 33x12.5 at about 28 PSI all the time. Unless it is really boggy they don't damage the ground. Mine is set up for minimal ground impact, because I have to be careful about damaging the land over which I shoot (golf courses, estate gardens, fussy farmers etc)

Biggest issues with the vehicle would be clearance on the arches etc. I haven't noticed any effect on mine with respect to wheel bearing life, and the running gear can certainly cope unless you are driving it aggressively (which I suspect is the opposite of what you'd be doing given your objective).

You could certainly go bigger and wider with the right suspension and wheel offset which would give you more flotation. You'll have to flare the wheel arches to meet MoT requirements if you go for a wider tyre.

The problem you'll have with going for more flotation, is that you'll start to loose traction more easily. I have lockers fitted to mine now, but it wasn't too bad with just the standard set up before with these tyres. It definitely has less ground impact now with the lockers fitted as you are less prone to spinning a wheel and tearing things up. 1988 110 200TDi Hard Top

With the same pressure supporting the same load you'll have the same contact area (therefore flotation), ignoring sidewall strength. The width of the tyre primarily defines the shape of the contact patch.

Hi wheels from an atmp supacat fit the defender hubs, we had a customer who had them fitted for lgp fertliser spreading.

I know I could reduce the tyre pressures I run to reduce the ground pressure too, but I spend all my time alternating between road and field and can't be bothered letting them down to pump them back up again. At 28PSI the tyres I run don't print on the ground unless it is so boggy that walking on the ground would do the same. 1988 110 200TDi Hard Top

I've seen a supacat ATMP and an argocat for sale on ebay recently.

haven't seen one for years, do the army still use them?

personally 255 width at 22-26psi would prob do all you need. if it needs more than that take a tractor. 18psi is the 'token' drop to without bead locks and keep on the bead. Cheers
