I watched a youtube video, and it was the opposite almost... It was based in the States
Garages had been suggesting 6 monthly and in some cases 3 monthly, but actually it said to check the handbook - which in most cases stated to change yearly or 'X' amount of miles. I have a TD5 - what does your manual state? Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

12,500 miles or every 12 months - whichever's sooner.

That's odd then, that your truck is pinging up every 6 months...?? Regards

It's the ECU calculating diesel content in the oil (based on the number of active DPF regens) the only problem is the ECU will still count a partial/failed regen as a full one.
If it was part way through a regen and you turned it off then it won't have completed its cycle but will still count it as a full one. Obviously doing lots of shorter trips will increase the likelihood of turning off during a cleaning cycle. I definitely wouldn't ignore the light though. As you say, for the sake of £50 may as well get it done 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Thanks guys. Nice to know it's not necessarily anything 'bad'.

I was curious what the viscosity of diesel was compared to engine oil, in case I'm not the only one here goes:
10W engine oil at -18C is 1300 centiStokes 30 engine oil at +100C is ~11 centiStokes (I think that's correct for a 10W30 oil?) Then for diesel at 55C it's about 2 centiStokes source: https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/kinematic-viscosity-d_397.html So it's quite a bit runnier even than SAE20 oil. I wonder how the lubricity differs. |

Oil is cheap- engines aren’t 6k change for me, just not worth it for the price of oil and a filter.

I guess that's a good way of looking at it. I am always up for preventative maintenance ... Regards

Does the service light go out once the new oil has circulated the engine?

Around every 6000 miles for my Td5 as a few have stated already.
Oils & filters are cheap enough. Not a great believer in these 20,000 mile services for modern cars. |
