Hi All,
New here and looking at buying a 110 DC but have some tail gate questions. Is it possible to convert the tailgate to a side opening as opposed to the drop down? Would this be done with just regular SW rear door hinges? Any suggestions then on mounting the spare wheel onto the rear door? Would a Swingaway be the best option? Also reading the other thread on wheel carriers does the rear door on an ifor Williams foul the tyre even with the carrier open? Look forward to hearing your replies. Cheers, AT |

I have done this mod and used the bottom 2 hinges from a CSW door.

Looks good!
How did you latch the non hinged side? With the original drop down catch? Thanks for the info! David. |

Yep,
Just used the standard latch, it was easier and it's how the rear wheel carrier closes as well so it works on both counts. I removed the bottom hinges, and the tailgate closure "ring" from the side the hinges were going on. The exposed tailgate was not painted so if your looking for a really tidy finish count on respraying the tailgate. I touched up the areas an I am happy enough with that. Just looking at this months LRO and the white 11 reg defender 90 in the Exmoor Trim advert has a side opening tailgate - using 3 hinges. Looks good. Here is a link to the picture on their site http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/index.php/cata...l?sef=hcfp Bob |

Cheers Bob, that does look good. Funnily enough I have that issue of the mag and it passed me by!
Hinges have arrived today, swing away has arrived too, just need bolts and the actual vehicle which I pick up on Tuesday. Will post some pics once the conversion is done. Thanks again! David. |

Picked up my 110 DC yesterday and I have already amassed the necessary stuff for the conversion.
Ben, just wondered if you had any tips for getting the holes aligned correctly for drilling as i assume there is little or no adjustment once drilled? Cheers, David |

I fitted the hinges with all the tailgate mechanism still in place, that way the hinges close it to the original position.
I also looked at the positions of the holes on a regular CSW and tried to fit it the same. 2002 Defender 110 DC Last edited by ben_j85jty on 26th Dec 2011 9:22am. Edited 1 time in total |
