Recommendation for 300Tdi/Td5 restoration
Hi, I wish to source and restore a 110 (either 300Tdi or Td5) based on my specs, and would appreciate recommendations for restorers based on personal experience please.

I have no space or experience to do this on my own, ideally would like to get some hands-on experience in the process. I am more concerned about the quality and integrity of the work, obviously also looking at reasonable rates etc.

The vehicle will probably require a chassis replacement and other bits that will become obvious during the rebuild... bulkhead, tub etc.

So far, I came across the following, but have not reached out yet:
1. Fun Rover
2. Alpine Restorations
3. Jake Write

Any experience dealing with the above? Grateful to hear of other providers and experiences as well.

Thanks in advance. APK

These guys seem to do quality work:

http://www.haywardrevive.com

I know Foleys also do good quaility Work and have been going since the 1960’s which says a lot.

http://www.foleysv.com

Devon 4x4 also have a very good reputation.

Personally I’d go for someone that’s been going for a long time- there’s a lot of these companies seem to come and go.

I’d avoid the one with a camel in their logo Whistle

Thanks Nick!
Any idea how I might get hold of the original colour codes for a Td5 Defender given the VIN?

Hello APK,

I do not have any suggestions for where to go beyond what has already been provided by Nick.

However, I would ask you to consider what is your goal with this project? I say that as I am currently doing something similar, but chose a 110 v8 as the vehicle of choice due to it being a bit more 'special' if you know what I mean, even if greatly less practical. I am fortunate enough to have a garage (albeit single width) which allows me to slowly work on it at home - but so far I have been surprised at how much I underestimated the cost.

I initially gave myself a budget of £20k excluding the donor vehicle, and I can already see that I'm going to blow way past that figure - and this is with me doing the majority of labour. I would shudder to think what the pro's would charge to build from the ground up. I am beginning to understand how the figures we hear from places like Twisted and Top Hat of £150k for a complete build are reached - its very labour intensive and the parts cost quickly adds up if you want to 'upgrade' things - which so far for me have been:

(a) Complete re-manufactured turnkey v8 fuel injected engine with ECU
(b) Ashcroft R380 gearbox with heavy duty bearings
(c) Refurbished Salisbury axle with Truetrac ATB and uprated halfshafts
(d) Long range fuel tank
(e) New galvanised chassis
... the list goes on.

Things which I am currently saving for are a set of 5 new doors (~£2k), complete Exmoor trim seats (~£2k?), front axle refurb, puma style bonnet, wiring loom, paint job, instrument panel, audio system, sound proofing....

The bulkhead in particular has proved spectacularly hard to restore. I've not found any of the big dealers willing the take the job on - although Devon 4x4 could source a brand new genuine Land Rover bulkhead (you can guess the price of that...). So I've just booked myself on a weeks intensive training course in welding, and I'm going to have a go and repairing mine myself, which will give me a lot of satisfaction if I succeed, but at the moment that it looking a long way off!

Anyway don't let me put you off. I was just curious about what you were aiming for over the 2016 110 Defender listed in your signature?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the advice. Wow, and I thought the quote from Twisted at £60k was a lot. Shocked

Been on the lookout for a Defender 110, either 300Tdi or Td5. I have found some really good specimens but they are very expensive and in that condition, I wouldn't want to modify anyway.

So, hope to pick one up that needs a bit of work and I wouldn't feel guilty customising. APK

Chris look up Moss side Land Rovers or Ghound on here he does Galvanised bulkheads, I’ve fitted maybe 15 of them over the past lot of years - currently have two waiting to be built into Defenders. People certainly don’t seem to understand the cost or the difference between a rebuild and repaint and bunging a new Chassis underneath that’s for sure.

As for colour post a picture and I can probably tell you what it is- only the later ones ever seem to have it on the servo plate.

Seller tells me she needs a new chassis and bulkhead, possibly tub.

Alpine white LRC 456.

That tub is rotten and needs replaced.

110’s cost a lot more to restore than a 90, two more doors (£1000), B-posts (£900) , and the rear tubs are expensive now- expect to pay £900-1200 second hand for a good Puma tub- I know you can get the parts from YRM to repair them, but that’s very labour intensive vs buying a good second hand tub. Bulkhead say around £800.

Some companies will source you a vehicle, that’s a good idea sometimes as they know what they are looking at Thumbs Up In my opinion spending a little more on a good “donor” can save thousands in the long run.

When you start to get into “modifying/upgrading” that’s when the price climbs.

Not had much experience with other suppliers but Hayward Revive in Norfolk would get my vote. Terry has just finished a project for my father and the standard of work is exceptional.

Thanks, I'm assuming that's the slightly creamy white vs yulong/fiji white.

I understand there are differences between Puma/300Tdi/Td5 chassis (mounts) and doors (rear door split), May I know if there is any differences between the 300Tdi/Td5 bulkhead and Puma/300Tdi/Td5 tub please? Is this all in the landrover web workshop manual and parts catalogue? APK

Does it need to be a station wagen? I am beginning to have thoughts about selling my 110 HT which will save you having to do 99% of the work you have described in your first post. It had a ground up nut & bolt restoration 5-6 years ago onto a brand new Galvanised chassis. The original bulkhead was stripped, repaired and galvanised. All steel parts were similarly cleaned/stripped and galvanised. Axles reconditioned with new OE parts and an Ashcroft ARB in the rear. Engine (300 tdi) had all seals and timing gear changed plus a brand new genuine turbo. etc, etc. Truck has been 100% reliable since the rebuild and has only been on a SORN and dry stored for the past 12 months as I fancied a T5 van and couldn't justify driving both. I was planning to keep the 110 forever, but like everything, I could always be persuaded to sell for the right money. The truck is well known to many on this forum.

Basically, if you are interested have a look at my build thread here and send me a PM:

Spent yesterday looking at a few 110s, looks like I might make an offer on this one. Very Happy

I am not hopeful that any of the panels, doors etc can be salvaged, but appreciate thoughts.
Looks like some trauma on left hand side, but HPI is clear.

Thinking chassis, bulkhead and perhaps tub replacement. Roof seems to look alright. Engine starts but I did not check gears and diffs etc. VIN is SW County spec.

Appreciate thoughts on:
1) how much I should offer, understand it is subjective but appreciate thoughts.
2) how much the rebuild to original spec would cost (I have reached out to all the vendors suggested)
3) Is it possible to approach the build in phases? e.g. chassis and bulkhead first followed by panels later? Can I get it MOT if the chassis and bulkhead are rebuilt first?
4) Richards or Marsland chassis? I am leaning towards Marsland as I understand they source from the OEM supplier to LR
5) Any suggestions on a bulkhead supplier? Will it be true to 300tdi or 300Tdi/Td5?

Thanks in advance!

That looks really bad I’ve not seen one rotted on the inner fenders like that before Neutral I’d start with something better- you will spend less in the long run. Marsland Chassis are much better than Richards and I’ve fitted many of both.

I understand your enthusiasm, but don’t jump in and buy something on that alone. That looks like it’s come from one of the Scottish islands only theyre that rotten.
