Air con removal
Is it a straight forward operation to remove the air con set up from a 2.4tdci? Mechanically I’m happy to do it, but are there any electrical issues I would come across, ie ECU throwing a wobbler for not finding it anymore?

Cheers

I was kinda opposite having just installed a previously removed system on my 2.4. Nothing to worry about! Take whatever you like off.
After 2 years or so without the system fitted, I bought new seals and refitted the lot. Compressor etc was all left in place. Condenser was rusted away, so needed to replace that, but yeah, all just plumbed in and worked a charm.

Why are you removing it by the way? I didn't half swear at the previous owner when I was refitting it all. Whistle

Ah yes. Don't forget to do that. An expensive and rare gas that we really shouldn't waste. I doubt a garage would charge to take it off your hands.

If it's still a working system I might be interested in buying it from you at the right price.

The idea to remove it is that i simply don't use it.

Travelling to various parts of the world has taught me to trust my body to deal with high temps and not an a/c set up Mr. Green

However, the A/C compressor could be converted to an air pump to pressurise a seperate air tank to be used for inflating tyres, now that is something that is useful!

As for selling the system, if it comes out in one piece with no issues and i don't use the compressor then i'm sure it could fund something else that is needed Thumbs Up

My knowledge of aircon is somewhat restricted, but my understanding is that the 'gas' contains 3 components:
1. the refrigerant gas itself
2. a liquid dye so that any leaks are visible
3. a lubricating oil.

The latter is required for the compressor to keep it lubricated, running the compressor without this is likely to be short-term!

Also the aircon compressor requires it's clutch to be controlled (defenders don't have the luxury of variable vane controlled compressor), usually this is done by trinary switch and temperature monitor either directly or via the ECU - both have been used on defenders.

I reckon you're best off removing the compressor and replacing with an air compressor designed specifically for the job.

I could be wrong though.

Your points are correct sloderby.

The refridgerant does contain a lubricant so a secondary way of lubricating the compressor will be needed. Most i have seen are simple valves that are opened on the air inlet lines and oil added before pressurising.

The flaw to this is getting the correct amount of oil into the compressor.

The clutch can be disconnected either via a manual switch when viewing the pressure guage of the tank, or a simple 12v pressure release switch on the tank which is what is standard on most workshop systems.
I would want both.

Removal of the system and fitting a production model will produce the same results. I would be buying a compressor ( albeit one specific for doing this and with some form of lubrication system built in ) with associated gubins when i've just removed something which will do the same job with some thought put into it.

I bought a Landy because i like to tinker Thumbs Up

Just-as-well, otherwise you'd have to learn to like it as tinkering is a pre-requisite of ownership!

I'm sure others would like to know if your solution is viable, keep us informed.

I have been gassless due to the useless design of the ac system on the td5 for 6 years now and nothing has broken due to lack of lubrication.
