I've never seen it done but that doesn't mean it can't, if you're keen enough. You'll end up building a new door from scratch, though.

Ditto what he said, especially with the dog guard fitted to the door
Freelander used a cable system so maybe a good place to start would be to get hold of an old door from a breakers & see what you can scavenge from it? |

When we had a freelander 1 with the tailgate window down there was a definite smell of exhaust in the car when driving slowly in town etc so we tended not to have it fully open

Could you do a cat flap conversion from a series motor and fit a drop down or side opening tailgate? You could then drive around with the cat flap open! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....
