well ours tried to kill us today
40 mph on a country road and "screeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........" as the car decides to lurch hard right. OSR wheel locked solid with no warning. Had it happened a few seconds earlier we would have been a bonnet accessory on a RRS heading the other way.

We'd only been driving perhaps a mile, but the wheel around the hub was warm to the touch, while the brake surfaces were cold. All points to a failed wheel bearing. Not what you expect for 27,000 miles.

Off to read my big boys book of wheel bearing changing tips Rolling Eyes

Nope. Been bog standard from the day we bought her, fresh from the showroom. Only difference is that we're now running 265/75 BFGs which are actually marginally smaller in diameter than the factory 235/85 TRs (a whopping 2mm smaller in fact)

Jacked it up just now and it's got loads of play and is grinding like a barrel-organ monkey on speed. How the hell we haven't heard it is a mystery. Confused

that extra width tyre size is unlikely to be the main cause of premature wheel bearing failure. more lilley water ingress or similar or a bad batch.

i would use Timken for the rebuild and you may need a new stub axle when you are at it if the race has seized on (worse case - also a big hammer to get it off!)) Cheers

every time I've had a wheel bearing replaced, it's needed a stub axle too, and it's never something that anyone seems to have in stock when I have a problem.... Rolling Eyes Mark S

It's nothing new though... when I had my "new" 200Tdi 90 back in 1992, all 4 rear wheel bearings died within a year.

When I stripped them out there was hardly any grease at all in them. A friend in the trade who lives near Solihull and dealt with the factory on a regular basis back then, told me that they only use(d) a teaspoon of grease per corner on axle build up!

Probably not much more thesedays either.
