Interesting article on the bbc news site suggesting the change to electric and automated cars is about to ramp up and lead to the rapid decline of petrol and diesel cars and ultimately drivers.
The article compares the situation now to the turn of the 20thC. I read that, too. It's an incredibly metro-centric article that takes no account of all of the things that people use cars for beyond simple personal transport. Daft, really Darren

There's a swell and movement forming, my Defender is my second car. My company car (hybrid) being the daily. Love my Defender but just wonder if with it being a big old diesel will it soon be worthless due to environmental pressure groups demonising all that is petrol and diesel. 1990 200tdi conversion 90

I think that just like there are still plenty of horses left (albeit used mostly for recreation) I think that whilst the majority may move to EV and automated vehicles there will still be a place for petrol and diesel vehicles

This is a very sobering post, makes you think how this will all pan out. If the demand for fuel in general drops, it will become an expensive and not viable for lots of us due to cost....
Then you have the vehicle tax to consider and how much that will increase? |

The thing that confuses me is where will all this electricity come from, will the grid be able to take it?

Interesting but more questions that answers, What about commercial vehicles will all HGV's be electric and driverless? That also raises questions, I know Tesla have been trying out HGV's but come on really Scotland to the westcountry with an electric truck?
Then what about the HGV drivers what are they supposed to do? they mention the taxi drivers being out of work combine that with autonomous shops with no shop assistants and drones delivering your mail it begs the question where are we all supposed to work? The say it will save people money but they will not be earning any to spend!! And just how will the government replace the billions of pounds per year milked from the drivers of fossil fuel cars and trucks especially if we are all out of work?! Makes you worry when you consider back to the days of the horse and cart becouse the coming of the car put all the farriers, stables etc out of work and nobody in government cared! Electric
Very happy to move across if it can equal or better the towing capability and range of my Defender Driverless We already have driverless 'cars', there called Taxis and Trains. I get the driverless option inner-city or even urban areas and probably a boring commute to work (which I have never had) I certainly get it for our aging population where safe mobility is a problem. What I don't get is the assumption that on-mass driverless is what the majority want or will accept being 'forced' on them. Imagine you get in your driverless car in the South of England program it for Scotland and then what... more screen time or you spin your chair round and play scrabble with your travel companions (am I heading towards the grumpy old man thread here...is it just me ) With so much now automated, pre-assigned, dumbed down, I don't want the pleasurable driving experience to be taken away. If I ever had a Driverless car there would have to be an OFF Button. How can you go on an adventure in a pre-programmed driverless car Lastly.... and seriously, who insures a Driverless Car, when it crashes who's fault is it... Insurance companies will use sensor data to ascertain liability in accidents involving self-driving cars. Self-drive vehicles are information-rich platforms thanks to the range of sensors on board that track, monitor, record and measure everything. In a sane world that kind of journey would be accomplished by driving the vehicle onto a train, or by means of other intermodal cargo handling systems allowing the railways to do the long-haul part of the distribution. The second transport revolution, if it happens, will be as dramatic as the first and will be painful for many! |
