Mornin all, MOTs due in a month or so..
This Being my first year of defender ownership i have no idea what i'm in for, just wondering whether anyone can give me any points to look out for and what has previously failed on your TD5s. Mine has already failed as the washer squirt has been broken for some months. Yeah, mine came with some track-rod ball ends because the first owner had to replace his every year so he bought them bulk in 2006, only one left though... my focus used to have all gaiters replaced every year...

If you put your registration number into the DVLA MOT history chek you can see mileage history and any advisories noted. The advisories gives you a clue to what to look at.

Well a quick look at your MOT history does not show any real recurring advisories and it is not an exceptionally high mileage vehicle.
So check lights, wipers, tyres, brake pads and steering components, wheel bearings and it should be good to go in for MOT. Remember a MOT can be down to individual interpretation of rules around the advisories issue. Our mechanic does a basic check at MOT time then puts it in for the MOT and then sorts out any issues raised. That way he can not be accused of doing unnecessary work to get vehicle through MOT. Looking at your MOT history I see there is the windscreen damage zone less then 40mm outside zone A advisory in 2016 not in 2017 so is that windscreen replaced or different tester? Our red 110 got windscreen damage in 08. Zone A professionally repaired, zone B damaged not repaired Mentioned as an advisory in 09, neither mentioned 2010-2013 Outside zone A mentioned 2014-2017 2018 both windscreen damage noted as an advisories. Had mine MOT's recently at a really good garage in Scotland who does a lot of work on Defenders.,..
I asked him whilst I was there. Other than chassis corrosion (outriggers etc) he said usually suspension bushes, especially on shock absorbers and rear arm bushes. Other than that, usual "car" things like bulbs, brake lights, etc (interesting I had to put a new reverse light switch just before the MOT)... chassis is one of the most common across the board to look out for and the ball joints and bushes. Part from that its just the basics really. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Hate to ask a lady's age but after about 10 years chassis starts to get unhappy (unless well cared for). Rear crossmember, bulkhead outriggers. Steering, from box to swivels. Best of luck. Ex scottish & southern 110 Td5 van (shed) with PTO driven winch (L-R special vehicles)
Before that, Disco 1, Freelander 1, 26105382 80" with a 1600cc (not much slower) |

i would check, drop arm ball joint, steering UJs, all TREs.
make sure she stops in straight line. make sure there is 2-3mm of material left on each pad. make sure no vaguness in steering check play in wheel bearings check play in king pins seat belts not frayed on door catches wipers ok screenwash works all lights work shes not smoking like a train use a pry bar and check play in all bushes check for chassis corrosion check no sharp edges. alternatively put her in for MOT, let them do the checks, you then fix what they find and save yourself time of checking in first place. Already mentioned, but lower rear shock bushes don't last at all and can go from good as new to knackered easily in a year. Simple to check and change if necessary. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
