Doesn't mean their cars are any more interesting though.

I used to be a massive VW fan - I've had several. Now the only cars in the entire range I'd give a second look at are the Scirroco and Golf R, the 180PS VW Transporter (then get a decent company to convert it -the California is INCREDIBLY clinical) and ermmmm that's it. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Agreed!

Last car I had before the 110 was a Golf R32.

Quite an impressive bit of kit, but still a bit of a yawn to drive.

Had several Audis (RS4, S4) and the R32, and to be honest I get far more satisfaction out of hustling the 110 round corners, in much the same way as I enjoy racing a 50 year old car on skinny tyres than a modern GT.

Plus, VW Group's pricing takes the p*ss (no wonder they can afford a 'transparent factory'!). Bought my wife a Skoda Yeti Tdi 4x4, and it does everything the R32 did (albeit at 90% of the overall speed), is great in slippery conditions, is every bit as well built as a Golf, indeed uses most of the same components, but at only 70% of the Golf's price! Plus Skoda dealers are by and large, great. As the advert used to say 'why pay more'?

Oce had a salesman seriously try to flog me a new Phaeton. I told him I enjoy physically seeing my money burn rather than waiting! Whistle

Mk4 or mk5 R32?

I had the former for a year and really liked it. Was forced to sell it when it became Bristols number one thief magnet. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.
