NO I don't think they are? It says on the boss 'For Race use only' or words to that effect! I've had one for a while now it gives me piece of mind when I leave the car as an extra layer of security
 I'd recommend but be aware they might not be legal ? Having said that I've never had a problem with mine. I always give the wheel a good tug once its fitted to make sure it won't come off!

Mine has competition use only stamped on it. I wasnt told that when buying it. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Of note caterham sell cars for road use with detachable steering wheels so the concept is road legal. Cant remember seeing any stamps but I was never looking for them.

Don't think any of the road models do....
Gt8 & GT12 don't have releasable wheels which are about the most track focused road cars... I guess when someone has a big smash with fatalities involved... then we will find out the insurance companies stand point. Probably the hard way too  |

But why would you not declare it as a modification to your insurance company?
I have one fitted to a different vehicle, it is declared and so fine for road use. |

On the product page on optimil I can’t see it saying for off road use only. If declared to insurance as a modification but subsequently found to be off road use only would that invalidate a claim ?

My understanding is that it is the motor car insurance policy holders responsibility to ensure that their vehicle is road legal/roadworthy. An insurance policy is a legal contract between the insurance company and the policy holder. There is normally a clause in the insurance policy that the vehicle is kept roadworthy/road legal. If the policy holder does not keep to their side of the contract I would suggest the insurance company has a get out clause to declare the contract/insurance policy void. However it is my understanding that if a policy is declared void they will pay out third party damages as a legal requirement however they maybe able to reclaim any payout from the policy holder.
Our insurance brokers have clearly stated that in the event of an 'insurance scenario' they are training the loss adjusters to look for undeclared and illegal modifications. Undeclared or illegal modifications or a unroadworthy vehicle would have a serious effect on the risks covered by the insurance company and hence insurance premiums. Certain items on a motor vehicle have to be type approved by law for instance vehicle glazing with the number 43R on each piece of glass. Now under the Road Traffic Act it is an offence to supply, fit or use a defective item on a motor vehicle. The steering wheel bosses supplied by 4x4overlander come from Raid and are approved under TUV regulations and have the TUV logo stamped on them. Brendan |

I'm not certain that off road use only has any real meaning other than to attempt to remove the seller from any legal consequences in this situation. In terms of what a steering wheel does I would have thought the forces it will see off road would far exceed those of normal road use. It's therefore hard to see it being an issue. A different matter when an exhaust is declared as such but due to it being for a 2.2 puma and having no cat or dpf, when it's just a different way of saying unlawful for road use. Update: I think the suppliers reference to off road comes from a mis-understanding of the EC Directive underpinning the UK legislation which states that it "shall not apply to parts or equipment exclusively produced for racing vehicles not intended for use on public roads." However, it does go on to say "If parts or equipment included in Annex XIII have a dual use for racing and on the road, these parts or equipment may not be sold or offered for sale to the general public for use in on-road vehicles unless they comply with the requirements of this Article." When I bought my qd boss I specifically chose this one https://www.murraymotorsport.com/snap-off-...-snar100-c because it was TUV approved. I have also told my insurance company of the modification.
