Change in engine sound
Something's changed, but I don't know what might have caused it.

A couple of months ago - basically overnight (so something must gave happened mechanically) the engine note changed. Under load, at lower revs, the engine note has become a lot more rattly. It hunts slightly on return to tickover.

At normal revs, while driving around town, it sounds pretty much the same as it always has. However on longer trips, when the engine is hot and has been at motorway speeds for say 30mins or more, it sounds really rattly, like it's chewing gravel. So much so that my wife said "Should it sound like that?" although she's usually blissfully unaware of mechanical noises.

Performance hasn't changed at all, it still feels the same under acceleration etc. And once that change in engine noise/rattliness had happened, it's stayed exactly the same since.

Any thoughts?

Yep, done that, run through engine diagnostics and nothing much showing. Head scratching ensued.

Injectors maybe? I'm not qualified to know what might make a difference.

I hate to blame the VCV but have a look in this forum for the term VCV and you'll find lots of threads with similar issues.

Personally I'd try a Pump and Injector Relearn first before changing the VCV.

Also worth checking the injector seals, they run really well even when the seals are past it. Tell tale signs are unexplained oil loss and wet oily reside around the top of the injectors. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon
Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition)
