Not sure but I would look for evidence of oil / coolant / fuel leaking, condition of hoses (if attached) and condition of pulleys etc.
Someone with experience of this will be along to advise, good luck |

Unless it has an identifiable fault, I'm not sure I'd be looking to replace the current engine!

In the end, all you can really do is to fit the engine and try it.

I guess can you get them to prove the mileage?
How often has it been serviced? Sometimes stuff that’s old and low mileage gets no maintenance Is it low mileage, but ran night and day on small site? Is there any diesel in the oil? Is the coolant nice and clean? Because it’s been off-road is the radiator full of stuff and the cooling systems had to work overtime? That’s the risks you take buying second hand, that’s part of life. I would look at getting your injectors rebuilt at that sort of mileage. Have you had a compression test done on your engine? Can you not get yours rebuilt or buy a short block from the likes of Turners and fit your head with a valve job? |

I've not tested my engine, it's been down on power and the heavy breathing, leaking oil for a while so thinking it's time. I'm not sure about the engine I'm going to see, at 20,000 miles a 2002 engine sounds too good for the price and I doubt the mileage can be accurate. There are too many variables that with this engine may not be answered. Others I've seen advertised are 140,000 -180,000 miles at high prices.... I have the skills to rebuild mine, just time. Thinking my best plan of action could be strip down, then at least I have a good engine until we all convert to electric motors!!!! Thanks for your great information. |

Td5 engines used to be very hard to rebuild - not in the sense of the work, but parts price and availability. I know they do +20!oversize pistons and bearings for them now though, which weren’t available for a long time aftermarket.
Cheapest way to get an engine is to buy a complete D2 with a rotten Chassis in my opinion, like you say it’s hard to find a Td5 with sub 100k |

Think wor'lass would be most impressed with a 5th car on the drive!
Had thought about a donor car but it's getting rid of the waste and higher mileages again. Think I will have a look at the engine tomorrow, you never know it might be a Champagne motor for Beer money .... Thanks for your help and comments. |
