I have a dream of one day taking the Landy to find the wreck of thei South African Shackleton in the Sahara. It appeals because my Dad worked at Avro where these were built and I always loved going to see the Shakleton on display at Manchester Air and Space Museum as a kid. Unfortunately the the crash site is east The Berm in Western Sahara, so out of reach for the forseeable. It's such a shame the security situation (and the risk of land mines) prevents safe travel in that part of the world. From the photos avaialable on line the remains of the aircraft seem to be slowly disaapoearing too, I guess as passing locals/soldiers/UN peacekeepers help themselve to souvinirs or have a need for a sheet of aluminium, or a Rolls Griffon. What's the liklihood of the political situation improving in my lifetime?... Not much I'd wager

When I was a lad (late 1960's) I remember standing at dusk at the end of a cornish runway (RAF St Mawgan) watching Shackletons taking off flying over my head out to sea. Flames from the exhausts and a great sound which I will never forget. 2010 XS USW

As they were based at RAF Kinloss, they were a regular sight over Inverness into the late 1980's.
There was something almost musical about the sound of the four engines. Unfortunately as a 'baby reporter' I was also on the scene when one crashed on a hillside in Harris in '89 or '90. Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. RR classic - fitted with 200Tdi 1984 RR classic - V8 with ZF auto box 1993 Discovery 300Tdi not to mention the minis and the Type 2 VW camper... |

I used to work at Avro Woodford. Although I’m too young to have seen the Shack in production. My era was Nimrods, including the Ill fated AEW version, which was supposed to replace the Shack.
I remember seeing 5 of them fly past Woodford when they went out of service. I also spent time at RAF Kinloss AKA Ice Station Zebra, as we used to call it!
