I am at this stage too Lozza. Last winter all of my 2003 110s door hinges suffered hinge pin failures. I am still Ummm-ing and ah-ing about the best route to take;

    Standard,
    Standard but galvanised,
    standard but stainless steel or
the plethora of very expensive billet aluminium ones you can buy these days.

There is nothing wrong with the standard items really, I just do not know how to go about painting them to match the rest of the vehicle. Happy to give it a go, but just do not know the stages and whether to use rattle-cans or a compressor powered spray gun...

Could someone point me/us in the right direction please?

Here's an additional route you could take. Takes care of rusty hinges once and for good.

Eric, those are absolutely beautiful and grease-able. The issue is a big one - At £730 for the four doors they are just too darned expensive. Gorgeous, but expensive.

Same goes for the Optimill version as well, weighing in at £520 for the four doors.

and for Croytec at £568 for the four hinges.

I am afraid Miffy is destined to remain with standard style hinges...

I also have an older, red vehicle. In the past I have primed/sprayed hinges myself using rattle cans - I don't have an air compressor or any of that kit. Looked OK for maybe a couple of years until the winter salt etc got to it, now it's a bit faded and grubby. I suppose I might have done it in a bit of a hurry to get the car back on the road, so maybe if I'd taken a bit more time, it might have lasted longer.

So..... at the Scottish show this year I had a look at the various alu hinges. My car is 'Portofino Red' (faded!) so I borrowed the colour match samples from Croytec and took them back to the car to see how close their red was... It was close, but not really close enough. It might be better depending on the precise shade of red of your car.

In the end I went for the Optimill ones - which are black. I wasn't 100% convinced about black on red, but I was accompanied by my style guru - my son who's a 20 y/o Mech Eng and Design student - he reckoned black on red would be OK, so I went with that.

Over the next year the car will probably get resprayed. I don't particularly want to do that, but it needs all new doors. They'll be nice and shiny, the new bulkhead is shiny... and if the rest doesn't get done, it'll be a pretty nasty patchwork. So I guess that black on shiny red will be even better.

But everyone's tastes will be different. Donald

Hi Don. Having lived with the Optimill hinges for a while, what is your opinion on them, build, action, etc?

^^^^^^^^^ I wish I could say - because it would mean lots of those jobs were behind me!

I got the hinges in advance, to take advantage of a slightly better 'show price'. It will be the next three or four months before I put the new doors on. Donald

Ha OK Laughing I am also looking in to the options to repair/replace the door frames. It is amazing how these things have just all got to a certain age and now need attention.
