Ahem - Freelander...!
Taken the 110 in for a recall (handbrake) and a couple of other bits. They told me I'd get a Corsa loan car but have ended up with a Freelander HSE (brand new)!

Okay it's not very hardcore but it's definitely comfortable, quiet and fairly refined.

Steering is over assisted and way too light but the handling isn't bad.

Boot and rear space is limited but well thought out, it goes fairly well when pushed (it's an auto) and the satnav actually works!

Not my cup of tea but I can see the appeal.

And yes, I'm about to give it a go slightly off road Twisted Evil Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

It's already rained...uh oh...

I have a very narrow and steep driveway - the extremities are VERY hard to judge unlike a Defender. The Freelander has a better turning circle (not hard!) but I found it a bu99er to get up the driveway despite a clutch of parking sensors bleeping at me.

Slightly odd. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

I had the same thing as a loner earlier this week, totally agree with your sentiments especially the steering, I also found the auto box dreadful, couldn't wait to get back in the Defender.

The auto box is indeed cack. I'm not anti auto - the BM has a decent 6 speed ZF one that works very well - but this one is pretty poor. Had the car sliding a wee bit a few times - accidentally on purpose... Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

The auto gearbox gets better as you drive it, if its anything like the Disco 3. It 'learns' your driving style and adapts to it, so I've been told. Our old disco started driving like crap, so the dealers reset the memory in the gearbox and it was like new again, and got better! Ben

This was the one they lent me a while back, as you can see I took it for a test run, as with all Land Rovers it was quite good of road considering the tyres and lack of ground clearnce

I got to drive two versions, an auto XS spec and a stop/start HSE manual. I preferred the latter.

The auto gearbox was very jerky, and the torque from the FWD was really annoying. It was less pronounced in the manual gearbox.

They're nice as a car... not as much space inside in spite of the bulky exterior.

Hmmm - just done some checking. This is an SD4 HSE model - 187bhp. I thought it felt fairly lively! 0-60 in 8.7s - not bad for an 1800kgs lump!

If I needed two cars in one, this could be a contender (nicer than other soft roaders I've driven) but I don't so two almost "opposite" cars it is - thank f**k for that! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.
