LED Light replacement including headlights on 90
Hi All

Thinking about replacing all lights with LED versions, the kit for all but the headlights are all over the place and seem to be made by Wipac and E rated? Any recommends or are they all pretty similar? May go for a smokey look as mine is grey. The headlights are a bit more tricky, they vary widely from 150-500 quid, again any recommends and why?

My personal experience is keep your original stuff.. I changed all mine a while back and hated them! They just don’t look right on a defender, especially the headlights! Just look wrong! But that’s my opinion, I would save your money because it isn’t cheap to do the lot then realise it makes no difference and looks terrible, you’ll get nothing back on them either. Sure people will disagree but that’s my opinion. Thanks Jim.

Good LED headlights obviously will make difference. But I’d stick to proven quality like a Nolden, Speaker, or Trucklite. It is much about looks here, very personal. The Nolden and Speaker probably have a bit better light spread than the Trucklite, but are a bit more expensive. The Trucklite are the most resembling to a standard headlight, the Nolden have been used by LR as a factory fit on late limited series. We see a lot of those three around here, personally prefer the looks of Trucklite and Nolden. But the light output of each of those three are miles ahead of standard headlights. I just discovered the new WIPAC Led headlight in LRO magazine, no doubt it is a good quality light too, but I never would want its halo circular light as parking and/or DRL light. Very personal all this.
I used to have the Speaker EVO, fantastic LED light, but in the end reverted back to my genuine SVX WIPAC Cristal halogens with updated bulbs and a Landreiziger loom. Good enough light for me and especially stays standard. The Speakers after a while just looked too high tech for my cube. Laughing

For all the non-headlight lights you can't go wrong with the WIPAC kit

Reasonable price, look just like the originals (if you go for the coloured ones like I did) and the light output is excellent Thumbs Up

Headlights are a bit of a mine field. I've recently been trying LED light bulbs in a set of SVX lights. Yes the light output is far better and yes I can now see where I'm going - but the beam patterns is all over the shop for everyone else. The only way I've been able to avoid being flashed constantly is to point them as low as the adjuster screws will let me. I can still see fine (better than the original glow worms for sure) but you still get the odd flash when the roads are quiet.

I'm still half tempted to go back to decent Halogen bulbs and the relay wiring loom mentioned earlier


I did try a set of JW Speaker lights and a friend who had Trucklites before buying the LED bulbs, but I just didn't like the light pattern they gave off at all 2013 Discovery 4 HSE Lux | 2001 Defender 90 TD5 | 2007 Prodrive RB320

OK where is my soapbox? Razz Cheap LED headlights are just that cheap! We got anther email on Saturday morning with a copy of their certificate. Shared that email with another trader and we both fell about laughing at this fake worthless certificate.

Most cheap LED headlights do not have the correct approval markings to be road legal. If your headlights are not road legal your vehicle is not legal and that can have serious consequences in the event of an insurance scenario.

Learn what an approval mark is. Genuine companies put their name on their lights. The best LED headlights are from Trucklite, JW Speaker, Vision X and Noldens. Price range is from £400 to £750 all road legal with correct approval markings.

Have been looking at a budget headlight this weekend from a reputable maker which on first sight looks quite promising and will be closer to the £300 mark and with genuine correct approval markings on.

The OEM supplier of LED headlights for Defenders is Noldens.

Fitting a LED bulb in a headlight designed and approved for a filament bulb is illegal as the headlight is not approved for an LED bulb. Have a look at the light function code on the headlight. It will give a poor light pattern as the headlight reflector and lens is not designed for a LED bulb.

When I tried one of those LED fittings just in the reverse light years ago it was rubbish anyway.
Also all the PCB contacts etc began corroding also.

Not to mention the fact they aren't legal anyway.. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Stornoway Grey
Don't know about headlights but I fitted a full set of clear RDX lights from BOB 5 years ago and had no problems.
